Current Mood: Geek

As I could not resist the call of Lego after the Wii U version (that my son and I finished at 100%), here is the test.

Graphics
A “10 years before” version of Lego City, where all places are recognizable, with obviously 3DS graphics, but rather well done. Nothing “beautiful”, but I do not think it was the aim of the designers. It was more important to link it directly to the Wii U version, which is the case.

Grade: 7 / 10

Music
Again, using the WiiU themes to give the idea of a “prequel”, but without anything extraordinary.
Grade: 7 / 10

Gameplay
Some actions are obvious, and guided. The playing freedom is less that on the Wii U, but some things are more logical. Just avoid playing this one just after the other, or you will always try to use the wrong buttons (1 L & R set of buttons instead of 2, no right stick, …). The game also uses different “disguises” with each their powers.
Grade: 8 / 10

Length / Sidequests
A bit shorter than its older brother, this game still has a good length for the missions only, and then you can try the 100%. I must admit I am far from it, not having the faintest idea where some items are.
Grade: 8 / 10

Story / characters
It is Chase McCain’s story 10 years before he comes back in the Wii U game. How he did a monstrous stupidity when arresting Rex Fury, and so on. It allows us to learn a bit more about Chase, Natalia, Rex, the captain, the mayor, … Rather well though of, if a bit caricatured.
Grade: 9 / 10

In the end…
If you like the Wii U game, you will probably like this one a bit too. If you are a lego fan or a young gamer, it is perfect. And not too expensive.
Final grade: 7.8 / 10

Current Mood: Super content

As Start2Play, through the voice of Eric (and also Nintendo) had the kindness to give me the game to test it, I only post the link to the website in the French post, and will add the English translation later…

Fire Emblem Awakening 3DS chez Start2Play !

Fire Emblem was announced for a while, and Nintendo and Intelligent Systems were helping us to wait by giving us pictures and traillers, but nothing to really prepare you to this jewel. Dive into a strategy game that, at your own choice, will take you by the hand or send you directly deep into the subject. 4.5 / 5

Open your eyes?
To be honest, I was waiting for something average, a bit “pixelated” and not very deep in graphics, since it was announced in the direct lineage of the previous Fire Emblem. But this is seriously nice. It is sufficiently detailed to be able to create a character that looks like you at the beginning of the game. And for both the cinematic scenes and the game itself, everything is well rendered. There is just a tiny problem with the weapons of the units on the map that are too small to be seen without pulling up the detailed view. An amusing detail: all characters in heavy armours look like they are on high heel because of the way the feet are modelised in the game… The 3D is not necessary for the game, but it brings a little plus in the combat animations, for example.

A nice music to my ears
Oooh, shiny. No, seriously, after listening to nice but not outstanding music in other 3DS, here, the real capacities of the console are fully used (may I remind you that it is usable as an MP3 player). It was composed for the game, and really in phase with the story. It is obviously symphonic and choral, to stick to the genre of the game. Each character has a voice (even yours, to choose between three tonalities), and while they usually only speak a few words or an exclamation, it helps to get into the mood. It happens that I mute the sound of the 3DS if I have other musics in the room, but here, I preferred to use the original game’s music.

Do not panic!
After choosing your character (gender, appearance, voice, strength and weakness), and the difficulty, you will learn part by part the basics of leading your team. It is both intuitive and gradual, without being to simple or boring. The game itself is rather nice, the actions management shared between tactile screen and buttons and usually well thought out. There is a possibility to automatise fights, but I do not recommend it, the AI is mediocre. And as long as you do not validate, you can still cancel and so to try several options for each action and character. The anytime saving system OR quick saving that disappears when loaded (depending of the difficulty you choose) and the combat save really allow to fine-tune the game. Even if you do have very few dexterity (like me), you will have no problem with this game.

Where there is talk about versatility…
What is great with Fire Emblem, and especially with this opus, is that the difficulty is completely customised. The choice is made between three difficulty levels (from Normal to Insane), then between two combat possibilities (save everywhere and units come back after combat if killed, or limited saves and units killed for good. Adding the optional and DLC scenarios and maps, and the Wifi-SpotPass fights, you can simplify the game even more. it is also possible to show more detailed combat information (weapons hierarchy, danger zones, and so on). You are really the one who chooses how much chili you want in your plate!

Try not to get lost!
Entry in the plot is done by something that looks like the end of a story… to continue directly with a turnaround. It may seem strange at first, but why not. You quickly become attached to the characters, there is mystery, action, humour. Let us not forget that in Fire Emblem, interpersonal relationships are part of the game and of the plot. Even if the pitch is somehow classic (a kingdom attacked by forces of evil), some aspects and characters give Fire Emblem a unique flavour. And dialogues / asides / relations between characters are the cherry on the top of this mount of chantilly cream. But be careful, you really have a lot of choice and space.

Hello, friends?
Despite not having multiplayer in the strictest sense of the idea, the SpotPass / wifi possibilities are there. You can send your team see the world, get other groups, do combats outsides of the scenario with a friend (locally only), and generally improve your fighters for the main plot. By the way, they recommend not to play with the date/time to avoid problems with the wifi.

Take your time…
Depending of what you play, the main scenario, secondary quests, DLCs and / or SpotPass, the length varies. Do not rely on the “chapter” titles, they are of inequal length, and numerous. The game is even lengthened if you develop the relations between the characters, and go into secondary scenarios-quests. I even think this game has a very high replay value. Anyhow, it is entirely worth its base price.

To sum it up:
It is really a magnificent success in strategy games, on all points, and a big yes in the 3DS games one should not miss. There is anyhow no other game of this scope or level in the 3DS catalogue for now, and it really is a game for everyone (except, obviously, to those allergic to fantasy). The additional content is really what it pretends, optional, and the demo available on the eShop allows you to make up your own mind. It is really accessible to all, and orientated both toward confirmed gamers and young beginners (it is Pegi 12, so if your younger sister or your cousin wants to try video games…). And I am certain that numerous people were waiting for it with impatience and will not hesitate to buy it!

+: great freedom to configure the game, free choice of gender, plentiful, Christmas cracker humour, saves system
-: lack of clarity of the “full” display, some counter-intuitive actions (shops, …), DLC too expensive after the price of the game.

Tested on the eShop version

Quick note: prefer the material version, especially if you want to refer to the user manual, or if you have a small memory card. The game as a download is more than 8’500 blocs, meaning more than a Go on the SD card, and you need space for the saves, and additional contents… There is a very nice Fire Emblem collector 3DS XL, blue, with the game in it.

Graphics: 4/5
Sounds: 4/5
Playability: 3.5/5
Difficulty: 5/5
Scenario: 3.5/5
Life length: 4/5

Rachael Stirling: Millie

Summary
Susan and her friends and colleagues all worked at Bletchley Park during the war. It was the intelligence centre, and especially the place were codes were broken and enemies kept under surveillance. Ten years later, Susan thinks she has decoded a serial killer’s method, and when the police fails to arrest him despite her help, she gathers her group again, and follows the killer with her best weapon: her intelligence.

My advice
I liked this (mini)series. It has detective work, feminism/female condition history, a touch of historical information, and so on. The choice of doing three (lengthy) episodes instead of one extremely long film is a good one. Also, costumes, sets, … of the ’50! It will not take too long to watch, so go on!

Graphics
Very nice, there are beautiful light effects, non visitable or breakable buildings are well designed too. My only regret: a bug, if you hijack a train, like my kid did… you end up going through the walls.
Grade: 9 / 10

Music
Wow, nice. Some parts gave me the chills. Also, music suited to each area and situation, which is a nice touch. And I am not sure, but I think many parts are “homages” to various films and series.
Grade: 9 / 10

Gameplay
Astonishingly playable… No, seriously, I was a bit worried at playing it all with the gamepad. Let us admit it: this thing is huge and heavy for a controller. But, with a bit of perseverance, I managed all kinds of missions: police, thief, acrobatics course, flying, … and using the gamepad as a scanner tool is fun. And even Matt manages to drive…
Grade: 8.5 / 10

Length / Sidequests
The main story is of entirely reasonable length, but if you do nothing on the side, you barely reach 25% completion. The secondary quests are funny (the farm’s thing… I will not say more, but… X’D), and you get lead on to do everything.
Grade: 9 / 10

Story / characters
Despite not having all details on Chase and his past, his character is funny and still has a bit of depth, and secondary characters are cool (Frank Honey killed me of laughter… the mayoress and the police chef…). Story is nice, with sudden developments, and a “real” end.
Grade: 9 / 10

In the end…
Yes, I bought the special edition, there was no other available here, and it had a Chase McCain minifig inside the box… Erm. So, if you like Lego, Lego games, nice and innovating games, “missions-detective” games, cameo-filled game, or are looking for an L.A. Noire for your kids, do not hesitate!
Final grade: 8.9 / 10

Summary
Around 1920, Phryne Fisher comes back to Australia after several years abroad, and decides to create a detective agency in Melbourne, to the inspector Robinson’s great displeasure, since he would appreciate not having a meddling amateur in his inquiries…

My advice
I love the humour, and the Phryne / Jack duet is very well done… Plots are good, costumes / settings are well done, vehicules “of the time”, and concepts in the scenarios correspond to the epoch. I like the secondary characters that add a touch of fun (the aunt, …) and the love stories are light, and non invasive. And there is a bit of everything in every episode: detective story, obviously, but also adventure, love, travel, fun, philosophy, …

Graphics
Graphically, it is nice, I like the drawing style, the theme and all, you can see clearly that for example Link’s clothing are a mailshirt with a tunic, and not a ridiculous kids uniform.

Grade: 8 / 10

Music
Musically it is nice, good themes that go well with the ambiance of the moment. And in addition, you get the CD that is worth listening to.
Grade: 8 / 10

Gameplay
Technically, it is… problematic. Once in two tries, when I raise my wiimote to charge the sword, it does not acknowledge my movement as it should. The fights are easy in that by moving your arms repeatedly and quickly in all direction, you can kill any monster… the game is simply physically exhausting after a while. By the way, even Link has a tiredness gauge.
An example of fight, flight, and tiredness gauge

Grade: 7 / 10

Length / Sidequests
About sidequests, it seems all right. Maniac as I am, I will try to collect everything, obviously. We will see how long I can go About the length, sinc what I did is only the prologue, it should be more than all right.
Grade: 8 / 10

Story / characters
On the topic of the storyline – plot, it is … too full of clichés. The rival doing stupid things to win, the girl who is the one who gets “caught”, the hero with premonitory dreams… yes, I know, it corresponds to the Zelda style, but this is too much. “oooh, the prophetic text I read says exactly the same”, “oooh, my dream did show exactly that”, … The characters are very usual.
Grade: 7 / 10

In the end…
I do not regret having paid a bit more for my wiimote motion plus… because I got 1) A zelda collector wiimote 2) this game. But I think I would not have bought it, if it had been alone.
Final grade: 7.6 / 10

Current Mood: Geek

Downloaded after a post on iGénération, Maily, despite some flaws, quickly became essential.

WARNING: I made all the pictures anonymous, by putting a gray rectangle with what should be there in black words.

Utility
Maily is a messaging / email App, secured, not for enterprises, but for kids. A parent will create each kid’s account, decide who he has in his contacts, and there are three security levels: nothing – copy of sent and received messages – validation of received messages. Everything that is settings, log off, … is under a parental code, independently fro the one of the iPad.

Interface
Intuitive enough, I would say, even if some aspects seem a bit wonky to me. From left to right: welcome screen if logged on, parental code for everything not kids domain, validation e-mail before the kid can see the message, gestion on the parent’s side.

The screen to create a message, an example message, a dialogue (on the left the kid’s and on the right the contact’s messages), the contact choice screen.

Connectivity
Maily connects with nothing else than itself (iPad version or through the website), and it is exactly the purpose of this App!

Price / In-App buysc
Free, no in-App buy, and for what they say, they will not add ads. I must say I would be ready to pay for this App, even only to support them.

Other
There is a validation process and the necessity for each contact to have a maily account, which can seem long and / or heavy, but frankly, when it concerns your kids… Their servers are sometimes a bit slow, but it always works in the end, and their helpdesk through the website is very very reactive. What I think is missing: an “undo” command to remove only the last drawing line.

Summing it up
If you take in account that I am always near them when my kids use the iPad, maily is a very good solution for their first steps into e-mails. They like to be able to send a drawing to their dad or granddads. But this App is there to remove one layer of worry to the parents, never to replace their monitoring. By the way, use the fact than you can create maily accounts from an email, not Facebook, it would make no sense.

Current Mood: Heureux

A bit of a hardware test, for a change.

Design
Since it is for kids, there are differences on size and shape. A little bit shorter, curved in the middle to hold it easily, a bit lighter, and the important buttons (A, B, cross, 1 and 2) bigger. Only problem: the “girls” version is an ugly princes design, no matter which of the 4 decorations you choose.
Grade: 9 / 10

Battery / accessories
2 AAA batteries instead of the two AA, but they get empty more quickly, though reasonably. On the other hand, the accessories, except for the nunchunk, cannot be used with this mote.
Grade: 7 / 10

Use
It is a “true” wiimote, so any game using the classical wiimote will be fine. Note that it does not have wii motion plus.
Grade: 8 / 10

Price / disponibility

Grade: 9 / 10

In the end…
It is perfect for my 4 years old boy, who, despite having big hands for his age, had always problems with the official wiimotes. He can now play Lego Lord of the Ring easily. So I recommend this to parents of little gamers.
Final grade: 8.25 / 10

Utility
It is a game App, but one that also helps with sociability and motor skills, …. there is no violence, rude language, etc., it is perfectly adapted to very young ones.

Interface
Coloured graphics, simple and happy, and a very easy and intuitive game. The only default (think of setting the “multiple fingers gestures” to off when your kids play…) is not to be able to “lock” everything else one way or another.

Connectivity
None, it is not made for that.

Price / In-App buysc
2 CHF (but often at a lowered price) for the app, no in-App games, which is good since it is an app for very young ones.

Other
It is not the only game of that kind by this publisher, but it is the most fun one, I think.

Summing it up
In order to have a few games for the kids on your iPad, I think this App is a good choice.

Current Mood: En forme

I tested my brand new 3DS with this game. And… well, see for yourself.

Graphics
The usual Laytons style is back, with the possibility to have 3D backgrounds and scenes. Except it is already useless. Yes, the cinematographic scenes have “flesh”, and the landscapes / items / people have a very nice visual aspect, but this is already done in 2D.

Grade: 7 / 10

Music
I like the music of the Layton series with theme reprisal. The ideas for Layton’s youth are nice too. But nothing absolutely essential.
Grade: 8 / 10

Gameplay
Here is another area with problems. The idea of separating movement and search is good. But in practice, having the movement mode as main, and having to clic and switch each time you want tot talk or explore is not very consistent. Some of the puzzles manipulation is also overcomplicated. On the other hand, it seems to me that handwriting (numbers) recognition got better.
Grade: 7.5 / 10

Length / Sidequests
Nothing bad to say on the topic. The “shopping” quest is fun, it is a bit of a wonky tangram, the quest with the rabbit is way too cute, and the puzzle quantity highly sufficient. With the possibility to answer only a small amount of puzzles to finish the game, it is really adjustable. I would even say that this is one of those few games with the perfect length, neither too long nor too short.
Grade: 9.5 / 10

Story / characters
Without spoiler, the story is the youth of Layton, explained in small episodes, and alternating with “now” scenes. There are links with the previous parts, and recurring humour. Layton, Luke and Emmy are still appealing, and the story is well conceived and coherent.
Grade: 9 / 10

In the end…
I would say it is a game to buy, first because it is a Layton, second because there are not that many 3DS games, and finally because it is a good game, even if not an excellent one. It is only… that it is not a “3D” game at all.
Final grade: 8.2 / 10

Current Mood: Geek

An App for (budding or not) cooks.

Utility
If you like to cook / test recipes like me, you certainly have stacks of books, magazines, hand written sheets of paper, pdfs, … A while ago, I tried to put everything in Filemaker, but first, it is not transferable, and everything must be done by hand. Paprika is the App that does most of the work: get the recipe online, put it in a standard shape, you can sort them out, have shopping lists, …

Interface
First, the integrated browser. Note the Enregistrer la recette (save the recipe) button (if the recipe is in a format already known), and the Nom (name), Ingrédients, … and Créer la recette (create the recipe) for all other sites, by selecting the relevant data and clicking on the button. Once this done, you can modify the ingredients, the recipe, the information (3rd screenshot) and the picture (4th screenshot).

You can search through your recipes, show all or one category, plan your menus, and once that done, if the menus are from your recipes, send the ingredients (you want to buy) to the shopping list.

Connectivity
The automatic capture system works with a lot of known sites, and you can ask the App creators to add a site (which is usually done quickly). You can send by mail, tweet or facebook your recipes… so, the sharing works fine. What is more, Paprika saves your recipes in a private Cloud, so there are no risk to lose them.

Price / In-App buysc
If I have something against Paprika, it is the price. The 5 CHF cover only the iPad App, you have to pay again for the iPhone App, and again for the OSX version. But, all right, the iPad version is enough for me, so I will not buy the others. Well, at least, there are no inApp buys.

Other
I also learned about this App first on Cuk, here: http://www.cuk.ch/articles/5241. I hesitated a bit, but the other recipes App do not seem as good, or are not as good after trial.

Summing it up
Pros and cons, but in the end, comparing it with the other Apps, and with all the advantages of this App, and knowing I really needed an App to put some order in my cooking things, the price question is marginal.

Summary
Portland, Oregon, USA. Nick Burkhardt is a detective in homicides, when he suddenly gets what he thinks are hallucinations. But his aunt, terminally ill, comes to visit with news and information. He is a descendant of the Grimm, the same of the fairy tales, and it is now his job to regulate non-humans whoever they are. And naturally, to help, he is supposed to keep it secret, and manage personal life, job in the police, and Grimm descent.

My advice
A good mix of plausible detective stories, legends and tales of all genres, humour (yes, really, Sgt Wu’s jokes, for example…) and personal life. While you must not expect a deep series (“races” names have mistakes in German [and Latin, says Tyr], there are Captain Obvious moments, or alternatively “but why are you loosing time doing… when you should be doing…”, and some unrealistic things, etc.), but a good series to watch with no hassles. And I have a soft spot for the captain, in the “I like mysterious characters on the good side of the law but with a but…” sense

Current Mood: Studieux

This post is here because I have had enough of todo lists on bits of paper, and then in electronic format, that always got lost somewhere or were not near me when I needed them.

Utility
Personally, what I like is the portability of the system. Both Apps synchronise with the site, and you can have a “Bookmarklet” in your browser to quickly add tasks on your computer. Something to plan I remember in the bus? Hop, a task through the iPhone. I forgot to update my list of next posts? Quickly, let us correct that from the iPad!

Interface
Left is the list of tasks (all or the ones of the chosen folder) with important information, star for special tasks, and the checked sign for finished tasks. Right, the details and notes, and modifications possibilities. Second screenshot, a new task: just give it a title (on one or two lines) and change if necessary other information. You can also have independent notes organised in folders (3rd screenshot). And finally, you can modify many parameters, including reminders and the number on the App’s icon

Connectivity
Toodledo is a bit of a different App, since it is an iPhone and iPad interface for the Toodledo.com site, better than you can get through the browser. The great thing is that you can even email or tweet a task! Between that and the site, you should be able to organise your occupation. However, once your iPad or iPhone up to date with Toodledo, no need for a connection, modifications will be done at your next App opening while connected to a network.

Price / In-App buysc
The iPhone-iPad App is 3 CHF, and the basic account at Toodledo.com is free. For my use, with notes and all, no need to pay for a Pro subscription. Obviously, if it is for your business and / or collaborative work, think about upgrading…

Other
I discovered this system through Cuk.ch, their article is here: http://cuk.ch/articles/3915. Again, be kind, if you are interested and sign on, please use my referal link: http://www.toodledo.com/index.php?ref=td5040f621d72ff, thank you!

Summing it up
Toodledo does all one can expect of a todo list system, and even more. The App is at a very reasonable price, so I recommend it if like me you need help organising your time.
