Médecine et santé à l’époque romaine

Sous le haut patronage d’Hippocrate, le Musée romain part sur les traces des médecins et de leurs patients à l’époque romaine…
Que se passait-il quand on tombait malade chez les Romains ? A qui s’adressait-on pour être soigné ? Quel était le statut du médecin, à une époque où aucun diplôme officiel ne sanctionnait la formation médicale ? Comment comprenait-on le fonctionnement du corps ? De quels moyens thérapeutiques disposait-on ? Une série de recherches et de découvertes archéologiques récentes permettent de porter un regard neuf sur la pratique médicale dans l’Antiquité, sur ses échecs et ses succès.

Cette exposition, dont la conception et la direction scientifique sont assurées par Véronique Dasen, professeure d’archéologie classique à l’Université de Fribourg, fait découvrir de nouveaux aspects de l’histoire de la médecine antique ; elle s’intéresse à l’activité d’hommes et de femmes médecins, à leurs patients, heureux ou malheureux, et au précieux secours des dieux et de la magie. L’exposition réunira pour la première fois l’ensemble des instruments du médecin romain.

Sunday Philosophx Club (Isabel Dalhousie) (The Sunday Philosophy Club – Friends, Lovers, Chocolate – The Right Attitude to Rain – The Careful Use of Compliments – The Comfort of Saturdays – The Lost Art of Gratitude) A detective story too, but a bit different. If Nr1 is a series that gives a large space to life lessons and country ambiance, Sunday Philosophy Club mixes philosophy and life in Edinburgh. Isabel Dalhousie has a quiet life, editor of a philosophy review, and it is because of her philosophy and morals that she tries to solve mysteries.

Mais où peut-on ranger un billet de loto qui vaut 9 millions ? Sans doute au même endroit qu’un billet qui ne vaut rien… Mais la réponse qui sera donnée à cette question ne simplifiera pas la tâche de ceux qui se la posent.

Summary

Jonathan Creek is an inventor of many magic acts for several “famous” artists, the man behind all the mad tricks but is not interested (and even refuses) to be on the stage. Timid and uneasy in love and romance, he is a genius. He is often wearing a Trench-Coat, and has long curly hair. Maddy is brilliant but unappreciated by editors. She always manages to get in places were a good investigation is needed, and has a slightly shady reputation… Adam Klaus is Jonathan’s “boss”, a magician comfortable on stage and anywhere he can make conquests (love ones, naturally).

My advice
Loaded at the same time with British humour, life stories and a very good detective story with intricate plots, Jonathan Creek is often broadcast as a repeat on the BBC Entertainment (after several showings on BBC channels and on France 4). The series ends after the fourth season, because of a drop in the audience at the main actress change, but a new Christmas Special could be watched in 2008 and an Easter Special is programmed for April 2010.

Summary

Helped by his butler Lugg, a former gangster, Campion however does not look dangerous at all: thin, glasses, dressed very cleanly and smart, he seems to be a simpleton. And yet, he shows very quickly but discreetly impressive capacities of deduction, is athletic, and can defend himself.

My advice
A detective series set around 1930, with two excellent actors perfect in their roles for the main characters, what else could one ask for ? Stories are nice though sometime a little bit far fetched, eight 100 minutes investigations, British humour on top of that.

He lives many amusing adventures, narrated by Stephen Fry, with much joy and humour, from the building of a block tower to dance or to the problems of sneezing.

My advice
Honestly, a great series, recommended to all, children and grown ups. Fun situations, a very clean narration in a perfect British English, no stupid assumption that your kid will answer correctly, light and cute “drawing”, this is one of my favourite picks for children (so, for Matt’, naturally). I would suggest buying the DVDs if you can afford them, 13 episodes on each is already a lot.

Having received the DVD for Christmas, I took a moment to watch it. A good slice of fun for informed and uninformed music lovers.

Summary
With demonstrations like “Bassoons have been secretly in love with the Bee Gees and incorporating them in classical music”, or “Hats off to the zebras!” and naturally “Docteur… Qui ?”, Bill Bailey largely uses the BBC orchestra’s capacities to give to everyone classical sounds… slightly adapted to the modern audience! Londonian of heart, he has to give a place to cockney music, and tries to have the last musical word against Anne Dudley.

My advice
It is pure genius! Obviously, Anne Dudley is very courageous to bear with this man who describes himself as “part troll”… anyhow, it is more than one hour of extraordinary musical humour in the line of Hoffnung or de Marianne James.

Résumé
Les humains veulent extraire du minerai de grande valeur du sous-sol de la planète Pandora. Pour cela il faut déloger les indigènes, les “Na’vi”, de leur demeure. La compagnie qui s’occupe de l’extraction est prête à tout.
L’essai diplomatique. L’air étant nocif pour les humains, ceux-ci créent des corps basés sur l’ADN Na’vi et humain. L’humain qui donne son ADN peut ainsi contrôler ce corps, cet Avatar, quand il dort. Un ex-marine, Jake Sully, fait partie de ces humains. Il est envoyé chez les Na’vi pour essayer de les convaincre de se déplacer. Il finit par prendre part pour leur défense.
L’essai musclé. Les humains détruisent le lieu d’habitation des Na’vi, un grand arbre, mais ne mesurent pas les conséquence de cet acte.

Scénario 5/6
Le scénario n’amène pas vraiment de chose nouvelle, une romance inter-raciale, la protection de mère nature, la lutte entre David et Goliath le tout mélangé dans un monde nouveau. Par moment l’histoire me fait penser à du Hayao Miyasaki (Nausicäa, Princesse Mononoké ou le Château dans le Ciel). Ce que j’ai beaucoup apprécié dans ce scénario c’est que pour une super production américaine les scènes d’explication ou de réflexion n’ont pas totalement été supprimées du film pour ne laisser que l’action. D’où la durée du film de 2h45.

Décors, Univers 6/6
L’Univers c’est la lune Pandora. Atmosphère toxique pour les humains, gravité inférieure à celle de la Terre. Pandora est la lune d’une géante gazeuse. Les décors sont grandioses, les plantes s’illuminent de nuit ce qui n’est pas sans rappeler la forêt de Macalania dans FFX. Grâce au minerai que cherche les humains et à la faible gravité des lieux, il y a des montagnes entières qui flottent dans les airs. La faune est également très bien réussie. C’est juste un univers magnifique dans lequel on peut s’immerger très facilement.

Et le 3D alors ? 5/6
Premier film (dernière génération) en 3D pour ma part. La technologie commence à être au point. J’avais pu voir plusieurs film en 3D au Futuroscope de Poitier mais avec relativement peu d’action. Là franchement c’est très bien. Globalement les scènes sont super bien réussies. Petit bémol, dans les scènes calme où des gens discutent, le focus n’est pas toujours là où on a envie de regarder et l’effet de flou dérange un peu l’oeil. Après il y a certaines scènes où l’effet 3D a été un peu trop poussé pour bien nous montrer ce qu’ils peuvent faire, c’est bien, mais c’est juste un peu trop. En revanche, les scènes d’action ou de déplacement sont juste bluffantes.
Note: les lunettes sont un peu lourdes après 2h45 de film…

Conclusion 5.5/6
Tout simplement le meilleur film de l’année! Si vous aimez la science-fiction, si vous aimez les beaux films ou si vous voulez simplement voir quelque chose de décoiffant, allez le voir c’est impératif! En 3D ça vaut la peine. Merci à James Cameron pour avoir attendu d’avoir les moyens techniques de le faire, c’est vraiment une réussite.
Pour justifier ma note qui n’est pas un 6/6: pour moi un 6 c’est parfait, là c’était pas le cas. Le fond du scénario n’avait rien de nouveau, même s’il a été très bien réalisé. Et le 3D était parfois un peu trop prononcé juste pour dire “voyez ce qu’on peu faire”. Quoi qu’il en soit je note toujours sévèrement ^___^

Graphics
As for the first one, the graphics level is very high, to be used in the puzzles. The animations are beautiful too.

Music
Unfortunately, I had to mute the music rather soon. It is not that bad, but… it changes when you open the menu, when you receive a puzzle, … so it is only in very short excerpt, and what is worse, they tried a thriller ambiance when they should have been stricking to the “film noir” style.
Grade: 7 / 10

Gameplay
The first one was easy to use (not easy in the puzzles), this one is even better. There is a notepad mode where you can write / draw directly on the puzzles, and character recognition works fine even with my bad writing, and even special puzzles are all right.
Grade: 9.5 / 10

Length / Sidequests
Though the games has more than 150 puzzles as a base, there are other things to do (from hamster race to tea [yes, Alis, you are doing quests for tea!], pictures taking, …) everything within the main plot of the game. Without external help for the puzzles, that means lots of gaming hours. It is not compulsory to do everything to finish the game, but I suppose that amongst the readers of this article, there are other “100% maniacs” like me.
Grade: 9 / 10

Story / characters
We find naturally Professor Layton, archaeologist, and his assistant Luke, as well as Granny Riddleton, inspector Chelmey, and so on. Some points of the main plot are clear a bit to early for my taste, but it is not so bad.
Grade: 8 / 10

In the end…
Do not hesitate if you like games that require a bit of thinking, it is a game that is worth it.
Final grade: 8.5 / 10

Summary
When Ronja decides to leave Kai, blacksmith installed in a swamp zone of Finland, she takes with her several Chinese historical items of Kai’s collection, and offers them to an antiquarian, Berg. It starts mysterious forces that send Kai (or at least his essence / soul) back to ancient china, when he was Sintai the warrior, protecting Earth from demons.

My advice
When reading the summary, I first thought “ouch, this must be a baaad film”. But I still took a while to check it, because it was bringing together several things: blacksmithing, wuxia, medieval saga and time travel. Well, in the end, it was a good initiative: the film is good. The different combinations, medieval Finnish saga / Chinese legends, wuxia film / Finnish romance, not totally modern craftsman / warrior a bit in advance on his time are really well done. And icing on the cake, the treatment of time travel and paradoxes is coherent.

Summary
On his eightenth birthday, Aaron discovers that he has strange powers (he can talk to animals, for example), and since he was adopted, does know nothing about them. He learns he is a Nephilim, the child of a human and an angel. He befriends a fallen angel, Zeke, and brings his college crush in the adventure, Vilma, who is a Nephilim too. Unluckily, the Powers (under orders of God) are roaming the earth to eliminate fallen angels and Nephilims. Aaron learns he could be the Nephilim of the prophecy, who could save them all.

My advice
Honestly, I was expecting better than that. I thought it was constantly oscillating between teenager movies and bad action series. Even the humour is not very good. I think the book’s plot(s) (based on the summaries) was used as a pretext (nice costumes, special effects and landscapes…) and not as a base for the story. Watch Sarah Jane Adventures if you want a good series with mysterious things…

A game for my love, bought with the rest of xbox live points (only 800)

Graphics
It is an XBox Live game, taking few space on the disk, so I was not expecting much. But graphics is nice, and I laugh when I see the support troops suddenly moving to throw grenades at your enemy.
Grade: 8 / 10

Music
If you are not a Sousa / American Band Marches, try a good CD instead, because though it is nice, after a while it gets annoying.
Grade: 7 / 10

Gameplay
For those who played Memoire 44 / Battlelore / Command and Conquer, the system might appear familiar (though officially it is not linked in any way), anyhow, globally, it is rather simple. Each unit has an attack, defence and HP level, and can move one square each round (some units are limited, no tank in a marsh, for example). If a unit is on one of the four squares touching an enemy, it can attack. The attack is in three parts, with defence shoot resolved exactly in the same way (a unit that reinforced its position shoots first but cannot attack): determine att / def (support included), play one or more cards (costs points), sacrifice one card for its special value. Depending of the final scores of att/def, there are damages or not. Once the player has done everything he wanted / could do, turn is for the console. The map, objectives and base units are determined by the chosen scenario.
Grade: 8.5 / 10

Length / Sidequests
The quantity of scenarios is reasonable and each one can be won on two levels (normal or exceptional victory, in fact), and there is a scenario editor (apparently the only way to play the Axis). I wonder if M$ will offer additional scenarios for a fee ?

Story / characters
Olivier who is knowledgeable on tanks and on the Second World War, thinks that characteristics and scenarios respects rather well historical veracity, within the limits imposed by such a game.
Grade: 8 / 10

In the end…
It is at a cheap price. If you like board games and/or wargames, go on!

I think it is Anubis who first told me about Braid, “download the demo game, I think you will like it…”, but I was also told by other people “you will see, it is finally a platform game in which you might succeed” (sic). Thanks for the trust! Anyway, I tried the demo, and bought the whole game at the end of it.

Graphics
Though special, in an impressionist painting style, the graphics are absolutely beautifull. Changing with the movements, and with the rewind (see gameplay), the game manages to be both fine and cute.
Grade: 9.5 / 10

Music
As for the settings, the music is beautiful, and what is more, IS PLAYED BACKWARDS DURING REWINDS! This is totally hallucinating.

Gameplay
I was worried that for such a game, the commands would cause problems. In the end, it did not, it is 95% of reflection and less than 5% of skill. Jump is A, rewind is X, some other possible things later in the game with Y, and the movement with the left stick. You can speed up or down the rewind with LB and RB. Placing the pièces in the painting is done with the stick and LB/RB. The idea is simple: you play as in a platform game, each level has one or more puzzle pieces to collect, but to do that, you have to use the “monsters”, levers, mobile platforms, … and ESPECIALLY the rewind of the game: as soon as and as long as you use X, the game rewinds, and everything goes backwards. So when you fall in a bad place or get killed, you just use it to go back to a safe moment ! On the images below, you see the rewind (yes, it is a bit more eloquent in the video presentations than in a screenshot) and the atemporal platforms / items (greenish sparkling light, not concerned by the rewind).
Grade: 8.5 / 10

Length / Sidequests
The game (which I have not finish yet) has at least 5 puzzles / levels to solve, and there seems to be “victories” for going through a whole level, for solving a whole puzzle, and for doing it in a record time (and maybe more).

Story / characters
It is amusing, the story is rather original and abundant. And there are veiled references… “The princess is in another castle”, savagely attacking rabbits and a main character called… Tim?
Grade: 9 / 10

In the end…
The only things that could have stopped me were the price (use a credit cards for the points, it is more advantageous) and the fact that it is on xbox Live, so on the hard disk, and not on a CD-rom, I would rather have bought a copy in a box. Apart from that, it is must have.

Wielstadt: (Les Ombres de Wielstadt- Les Masques de Wielstadt – Le Chevalier de Wielstadt) The story of Kantz, exorcist and knight, in the city of Wielstadt, in 1620, who finds himself in a struggle of power who seems even to have surnatural links. The dragon protecting the city even reacted… And Kantz never let his friends down, wathever the reason and the person of the one hunting them.

Ambremer: (Les enchantements d’Ambremer – L’élixir d’oubli) Louis Denizart Hyppolyte Griffont is a mage of the Cyan Circle. Some people ask him for help as councellor, in this Paris of the “Belle Epoque” where fantastical creatures can be found near the Seine, and where winged cats fly around a perfect white wood Eiffel Tower. Between a cheater using magic in a nearby gaming circle and a long time friend asking him to help getting a book not so difficult to getr, Louis Griffont feels like things are far more complicated and moving than they seem.
