Résumé: Book Description
The wizard Alder comes from Roke to the island of Gont in search of the Archmage, Lord Sparrowhawk, once known as Ged. The man who was once the most powerful wizard in the Islands now lives with his wife Tenar and their adopted daughter Tehanu. Alder needs help: his beloved wife died and in his dreams she calls him to the land of the dead - and now the dead are haunting him, begging for release. He can no longer sleep, and the Wizards of Earthsea are worried. But there is more at stake than the unquiet rest of one minor wizard: for the dragons of Earthsea have arisen, to reclaim the lands that were once theirs. Only Tehanu, herself daughter of a dragon, can talk to them; it may be that Alder's dreams hold the key to the salvation of Earthsea and all the peoples who live there.

From the Back Cover
The bestselling saga that started with A Wizard of Earthsea continues in this triumphant, potent and fantastical tale of magic, love and dragons. Every night the sorcerer Alder dreams of his wife, who died young and wants so much to return to him that she kissed him across the low stone wall that separates our world from the land of the dead. The dead pull Alder to them, seeking to free themselves through him and invade Earthsea. In desperation, Alder turns to Sparrowhawk, the former Archmage, and is told to seek out Tenar, Tehanu and the young King Lebannen. With these three and the amber-eyed Irian, a dragon able to take the shape of a woman, Alder journeys to the Immanent Grove on Roke. For the incursion of the dead is not the only danger threatening Earthsea: the dragons are back. And after centuries of peace, they come to claim what they believe is rightfully theirs. 'I adored The Other Wind. Real mythmaking, done by a master of the craft. . . . The magic of Earthsea remains as potent, as wise and as necessary as anyone could dream.' Neil Gaiman, author of Coraline and The Sandman.

Fire Rose (The)
Auteur(s): Mercedes Lackey
Editeur: Baen
Genre: Fantastic
Série: Elemental Masters 1
Résumé: Midwest Book Review
Lackey's story of a young turn of the century female who is brought to the wilds of San Francisco to read books for a reclusive alchemist recreates the fable of the monster who wins the heart of a young woman yet forbids her to view him. For the monster here is a magician caught in a werewolf spell, and the young girl is a destitute young woman with no other choices. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Série: Elemental Masters 2
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Putting a fresh face to a well-loved fairytale is not an easy task, but it is one that seems effortless to the prolific Lackey, best known for her Valdemar series (Arrows of the Queen, etc.). In a brilliant twist, the author sets the classic story of Sleeping Beauty in Edwardian England, imbuing her characters with the power of elemental magic, including the cursed child herself, Marina Roeswood. In an uninvited visit to her christening, Marina's evil aunt, Arachne, arrives in a puff of smoke and delivers a deadly curse, which is mitigated by the blessing of a family friend who imparts one last gift on the baby. Marina's guardians spirit her away to the Devon countryside to grow up. When we next see her, Marina is galloping through her 17th year, pursuing her magical training, though her guardians have tragically kept her ignorant of the curse. The inevitable triggering of said curse, when she turns 18, pits Marina's intelligence, cunning and magic skills against the full force of satanic evil. Beautiful phrasing and a thorough grounding in the dress, mannerisms and history of the period help move the story along gracefully. Marina's character, along with those of her guardians, her friends and Arachne, are fully fleshed out and credible. The fact that a teenage half-trained water mage would even dare to take on a 40ish satanist may be a bit implausible, but only on second thought. This is a wonderful example of a new look at an old theme.

From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-Fanciful and winsome, Sleep is a fantastical version of "Sleeping Beauty" set in England at the turn of the 20th century. Taken care of by family friends since infancy and surrounded by mages, Marina lives a charmed life. Befriended by water sprites, nymphs, and the like, she slowly comes to know why her loving parents sent her away. Tragically, just before her 18th birthday, they die in an "accident," and Marina is ripped from her idyllic country home by her coldly beautiful Aunt Arachne. The woman is controlling and harsh, yet even to the magically gifted she doesn't appear evil. Despite the lack of evidence, Marina's instincts gnaw at her, and fortunately she listens. A visit to one of her aunt's pottery factories provides unpleasant revelations both physical and metaphysical. Old-fashioned manners, dress, and speech set the tone in this pleasantly escapist novel. Mixed in are light touches of modern issues such as feminism and eco-awareness. YAs who liked fairy tales as kids will enjoy Lackey's spin on an old favorite.

Book Description

Serpent's Shadow (The)
Auteur(s): Mercedes Lackey
Editeur: DAW Books
Genre: Fantastic
Série: Elemental Masters 4
Résumé: Mercedes Lackey returns to form in The Serpent's Shadow, the fourth in her sequence of reimagined fairy tales. This story takes place in the London of 1909, and is based on "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." Lackey creates echoes of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, pays affectionate homage to Dorothy Sayers's Lord Peter Wimsey (who plays an important role under a thin disguise), and turns the dwarves into seven animal avatars who masquerade as pets of her Eurasian heroine, Maya.
Some of Maya's challenges come from the fact that she is not "snow white," and she has fled India for her father's English homeland after the suspicious deaths of her parents. Establishing her household in London, she returns to her profession as a physician, working among the poor. Her "pets" and loyal servants stand guard, and Maya herself uses what bits of magic she managed to pick up in childhood to weave otherworldly defenses as well. But the implacable enemy who killed her parents has come to London to search for her; if Maya can be enslaved, her enormous potential powers can be used to the enemy's ends. Fortunately, English magicians of the White Lodge have also noted a new, powerful presence in their midst, though they're having trouble locating her, too. They send Peter Scott, a Water Master, to track her down. He finds Maya beautiful and benign, and is determined to teach her to use the Western magic she is heir to, before her enemy discovers her.
Some will find the author's Kiplingesque descriptions of India and Hindustani culture offensive. Lackey describes Maya's enemy as a powerful devotee of the goddess Kali-Durga, though she carefully shows that the avatars of the other deities will not attack her, and has Kali-Durga repudiate her servant in the climactic confrontation. And, though the story is layered, its surface is as glossy and brightly colored as an action comic. But readers who enjoy late Victorian London, Sayers, Sherlock Holmes stories, and a page-turning tale will want to take this one home. --Nona Vero
Elvenbane
Auteur(s): Andre Norton, Mercedes Lackey
Editeur: Tor Books
Genre: Fantastic
Série: Elvenbane 1
Résumé: Dragons are the good guys and elves are the badies which is a nice twist. This book gives you characters you can believe in and care about, it is also really well written with almost three seperate books in one as the story flows through.
I had to give it four stars rather than five as there is that slight tendency for things to happen far to easily to be believable (admittedly it is a fantasy story so what is believable anyway)
But if you like to escape to a world of fantasy then give this one a try.

Book of Enchantments
Auteur(s): Patricia C. Wrede
Editeur: Magic Carpet Books
Genre: Fantastic
Série: Enchanted Forest 5
Résumé: From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8?This enjoyable fantasy collection is comprised of 10 stories that vary widely in tone and setting. Some are laced with humor, while others have melancholy overtones. Two tongue-in-cheek tales are set in the "Enchanted Forest" of the author's dragon series (Harcourt). One of these selections involves a thoroughly conceited unicorn; the other a weapon of great power, the frying pan of doom. "The Lorelei" offers a modern version of the German legend. Another takeoff on an old story gives readers a look at what would have happened to Sleeping Beauty's castle if the prince had failed to arrive on time. Each selection stands alone, but also seems as if it might belong to some longer tale as yet untold. A chapter of notes from the author concludes the book. While a few of the stories may have messages that are a bit too subtle for the intended audience, the volume as a whole should have high appeal for fantasy lovers and might lure some newcomers to the genre.?Bruce Anne Shook, Mendenhall Middle School, Greensboro, NC

From Booklist
Gr. 5^-8. This collection of short stories featuring enchantments offers a surprisingly varied selection. Most of the stories are set in a place of high fantasy--long ago and far away--yet several have modern settings. One is based on a fairy tale, another on a ballad, and a third was inspired by the biblical parable of the prodigal son. Even readers who aren't drawn to the literature of sword and sorcery may enjoy "Utensile Strength," a humorous tale in which a wizard tries to create the ultimate weapon and ends up with the Frying Pan of Doom. Those familiar with the genre will find it even funnier. A well-crafted anthology with several selections suitable for reading aloud. Carolyn Phelan--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
