The Black Gryphon (Mage Wars)
Auteur(s): Mercedes Lackey, Larry Dixon
Editeur: DAW Books
Genre: Fantastic
Série: Valdemar 1
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Setting a story in prehistory suggests a enormous potential, a feeling that all is new and possible. Lackey's latest created world (illustrated by husband Dixon) predates the setting of her Valdemar series by a millennium but never quite lives up to its expanded possibilities. The gryphon of the title is the charismatic Skandranon, leader of the gryphons, a race of birds just evolving into awareness. After establishing this intriguing premise, however, the tale soon bogs down in fantasy cliches as the main characters fight a standard war against the forces of evil. Although some of the novel's elements, like Skandranon's human friend Amberdrake, suggest a possible complexity, the plot is predictable and the overwritten battle scenes are difficult to follow. In the end, the evil Mage of Black Fire is destroyed, nearly everyone else lives and the chaotic magic of prehistory is tamed.

As the tyrant-sorcerer Kiyamvir Ma'ar's forces sweep across the land in a relentless war of conquest, one man--Urtho, the Mage of Silence--arises as the leader of the opposition. Set a thousand years before the founding of Valdemar and the rise of the Herald Mages, the latest novel by Lackey and Dixon relates the story of the legendary black gryphon Skandranon Rashkae, his healer-companion Amberdrake, and the war that changed the face of a world forever. Featuring some of the authors' most endearing protagonists yet, this first in a projected dualogy is recommended for most fantasy collections.

The White Gryphon (Mage Wars)
Auteur(s): Mercedes Lackey, Larry Dixon
Editeur: DAW Books
Genre: Fantastic
Série: Valdemar 2
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
There is pleasure to be taken from novels of intrigue in which readers don't have to think at all, where their hands are held throughout the action and nothing is anything but what it seems. In Lackey and Dixon's second novel of the Gryphon trilogy (after The Black Gryphon), holdover heroes Skandranon, Amberdrake and Winterhart attempt to establish a political liaison with the Haighlei and their king, Shalaman, in order to to preserve the autonomy of the city of White Gryphon. But a series of grisly murders is perpetrated in ways such that Skan, a gryphon, becomes the chief suspect, thus jeopardizing their negotiations. Several twists and turns follow, but the characters are so pure of heart that they overlook the obvious, and too many improbabilities pile up. The authors maintain a frenetic narrative pace, despite the frequent bromidic asides ("often, one can be in love with who they think someone is"). But even as a page-turner, this novel is likely to leave readers suspecting that Lackey and Dixon are just biding their time, that maybe the third book of the trilogy will be something special. What they present here is a harmless confection, less fattening than an eclair and about as nutritious.

Ten years have passed since the death of Urtho, the Mage of Silence. The survivors of the catastrophic battle have built the city of White Gryphon, hoping to found a permanent settlement in a new land. When a delegation from the Court of the Black Kings disputes their existence on the fringes of its territory, the mage-gryphon Skandranon and his friend Amberdrake find their diplomatic skills tested to the fullest as they become embroiled in a conspiracy of assassination that threatens a possible alliance. Set in the world of the popular Valdemar series, this latest novel by coauthors Lackey and Dixon (Chrome Circle, LJ 8/94) tells a tale of intrigue and mystery enhanced by vivid descriptions of an exotic, ritualistic culture. From Kirkus Reviews
Third in the Mage Wars trilogy from the wife and husband team. Twelve peaceful years have passed since the action of The White Gryphon (1995), while Skandranon the Black Gryphon and Amberdrake the Healer settle down into comfortable middle age. An elite warrior force, the Silver Gryphons, has been formed to protect the city--a force that Skandranon's son Tad and Amberdrake's daughter Blade, sowing rebellious streaks, have joined. Following two long, hard years of training, Tad and Blade are given the difficult assignment of occupying a remote guard post reachable only across miles of unknown territory. On the way, a strange force drains Tad's magic powers. So, alone, injured, and desperate, Tad and Blade find themselves beset by Wyrsa, dreadful mage-created hybrid creatures who have the power to absorb magic. Résumé: Brightly Burning marks Mercedes Lackey's return to the kingdom of Valdemar, and introduces us to a portion of the otherwise unchronicled reign of King Theran. The book's principle figure is Valdemar's most powerful herald, Lavan Firestorm, who comes of age during Valdemar's war with its long-time enemy, the kingdom of Karse.
Sixteen-year-old Laven Chitward's world is turned upside down when his mother is selected as a textile guild representative in the small rural community where he was raised. Moving to the capital city of Haven rips him away from his friends and boyhood pleasures, and nothing in Haven seems to fill that void. Unable to fit into the nouveau riche society, and unwilling to follow his parents into the textile guild, he finds himself adrift and depressed. His father enrolls him in a special school that will allow him to choose a trade that interests him, rather than be apprenticed against his will. There he finds himself terrorized and tortured by the boys in the sixth form until, with an awful roar, the gift of fire awakens deep within him and extracts revenge for his sadistic treatment.
With the help of a unique herald, an empathetic healer and a special companion, Laven soon learns to keep his gift under control and eventually, to direct his awful firestorm as far as he can see. When the kingdom of Karse attacks, Laven is hurried to the border to assist his king and country by repelling the invasion. During the final battle Laven earns the name Firestorm and becomes one of the most famous heralds in the history of Valdemar.
Brightly Burning is a distinct and unforgettable coming-of-age story. With a compelling cast of characters and lively dialog, Mercedes Lackey once again demonstrates her adroit mastery of fantasy fiction. --Robert Gately

Résumé: From Library Journal
Trained from childhood in the arts of war, Alberich strives to walk a careful path between obedience to the priests of Vkandis Sunlord and fairness to the soldiers under his command and the people of his native land of Karse. His attempts to hide his heretical gift of precognition, however, earn him a sentence of death by fire, thwarted by a bold rescue seemingly engineered by his faithful white battle steed-in actuality one of the Companions of the Heralds of Valdemar. Lackey continues her popular Valdemar series with the story of Alberich, Weaponsmaster and Queen's Champion of a land he was taught to fear and hate, as he struggles to redefine the meaning of the honor he holds so dear while learning to accept the magic he once tried to conceal. Libraries should anticipate demand for this highly recommended fantasy.

Exile's Valor: A Novel of Valdemar

Série: Valdemar 12
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Making love and not war is the theme of Lackey's entertaining high fantasy, the second in a trilogy (after 2002's Exile's Honor) within her long-running Valdemar series-not that love is any less of a battlefield. Alberich of Karse, the outsider Herald, must watch over the newly enthroned queen, Selenay, as he trains young Heralds by day and chases down treasonous plots in the alleys and shady locales of Haven by night. Along the way, his recruit in the arts of undercover work, Herald-Chronicler-Second Myste, provides him with her own ideas of work under covers. And his Companion, the intelligent, mind-linked equine Kantor, keeps Alberich honest with a sardonic sense of humor. The recently bereaved Selenay, too, faces her own challenge in the court of love, first from anxious councilors trying to arrange a royal marriage, then from the too-good-to-be-true Prince Karathanelan of Rethwellan. Will good triumph in the end? That answer will have to wait for the next book, as the master villain remains unknown. But it would take a poor gambler to bet against a set of characters so obviously beloved by their author, despite her inflicting a Germanic speech pattern on poor Alberich, who often sounds like Yoda. Long-time readers will appreciate learning more of favorite characters. Newcomers will definitely feel as though they have walked in on the middle of a gossipy conversation.

The sequel to Exile's Honor [BKL S 15 02] continues the adventures of Herald Alberich, former Karsite captain turned herald of Valdemar. After the Tedrel War, few, if any, doubt Alberich's loyalty to his adopted country, which is just as well, for the death of King Sendar during that war put his daughter Selenay, who had barely finished herald's training, on the throne of Valdemar. She had expected years of apprenticeship in ruling at her father's side, but she is now queen of a country that, while victorious, is weakened by the bloody war. Furthermore, her council and some of her heralds see her as too inexperienced and badly in need of a consort. Alberich is now the Collegium weapons master, a job that includes keeping track of Valdemar's enemies, internal and external. What with court intrigues, foreign envoys, and Selenay's grief, Alberich's duties are no less time-consuming than were his wartime responsibilities. A must for Valdemar fans. Frieda Murray

Genre: Fantastic
Série: Valdemar 19
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
In this sequel to Winds of Fate, Elspeth, heir to the throne of Valdemar, develops into a strong practitioner of magic under the tutelage of Darkwind k'Sheyna. Accepted as a member of the k'Sheyna clan of the Tayledras, magicians who cleanse lands damaged in the long-ago Magic Wars, Elspeth takes her turn in patrols searching for the vanished Falconsbane, an evil Adept who almost destroyed the clan, its Heartstone, and Darkwind's father Starblade. While Elspeth and Darkwind slowly and contentiously come to love each other, her companion Skif seeks the Changechild Nyara, daughter of Falconsbane, who turned against him to save the Vale of the k'Sheyna and then fled into the wilderness with the enchanted sword Need. Aided by the powerful but mysterious mage Firesong k'Treva, the Vale fights off another attempt at destruction by Falconsbane, while still greater powers put in an appearance and set the stage for the Mage Wind trilogy's projected third title. This is a charming, colorful and romantic coming-of-age tale, deeply imbued with the concept of responsibility as well as the imagined pleasures of power.

Storm Rising (The Mage Storms 2)
Auteur(s): Mercedes Lackey
Editeur: DAW Books
Genre: Fantastic
Série: Valdemar 22
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Lackey's latest continues the old-fashioned, simple-is-as-simple-does tradition that has made her numerous series set in and around the kingdom of Valdemar so accessible to so many readers. Her bloated prose is balanced by two-dimensional caricatures such as those of Karal, the diplomat who "knows he is too young," An'desha ("Do I want to be?alone?") and Firesong, who is prone to neurotic ramblings. Expectedly, Firesong's ills are not of his own making; he and the good characters here are uniformly good, lacking any shades of gray to give them depth. Even Grand Duke Tremane, who ordered murders in this novel's prequel, Storm Warning, has a heart of gold. Above all, this volume suffers from lack of a proper villain. Perhaps the windup to this promised trilogy will be more engaging; meanwhile, this middle volume fits Karal's description of a council meeting: "very little accomplished and nothing really settled."

As the violent mage storms ravage the land of Valdemar and its neighbors, warring factions struggle to overcome personal and political prejudices to combat a greater enemy. Lackey (The White Gryphon, LJ 3/15/95) continues to expand upon her world's rich history and cultures while probing the sometimes petty, sometimes noble motivations that impel her characters toward their destinies. Storm Breaking (The Mage Storms 3)
Auteur(s): Mercedes Lackey
Editeur: DAW Books
Genre: Fantastic
Série: Valdemar 23
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
The Mage Storms trilogy, which is itself but one of several novel-clusters in Lackey's epic Heralds of Valdemar fantasy series, concludes with zest as the mysterious mage-storms?set back temporarily in Storm Rising?continue to produce monsters, disrupt magic (on which many cultures in Lackey's fantasy universe depend) and threaten to demolish all that exists. Here, the western allies, including mages and the Sun-priest Karal, look desperately among the exotic machines in the Tower of Urtho, the Mage of Silence, for a way to stop the storms; elsewhere, in Hardorn, Duke Tremane is offered the kingship, contingent upon a primitive ritual that will tie his fate to that of the land. Emperor Charliss declares Tremane a traitor and names Baron Melles his heir, allowing Melles new latitude for infamy. Many familiar characters from Lackey's previous books are here, as well as some impressive new ones, including a gryphon delegation from Iftel. Unlike most fantasy, this novel errs on the side of too little description, but, even so, Lackey's world remains rich in ideas and personalities, and the magic she imagines (unlike the political intrigue) continues to be complex and often innovative. Come the next stormy night, admirers of her brand of fantasy will enjoy curling up with this tempestuous work.

Résumé: From Library Journal
Following the events in Storm Breaking (LJ 10/15/96) but without continuing that novel's characters, the stand-alone Owlflight is the latest in Lackey and Dixon's "Valdemar" series. After mage-storms wreak havoc with the laws of magic, his parents disappear, and barbarians sack and burn his village, young Darian retreats into the forest. There he encounters a magical race and discovers his own special powers with birds. This engrossing tale of discovery is recommended especially for libraries that collect the "Valdemar" fantasy series.

From Kirkus Reviews
Stand-alone Valdemar yarn from the wife-and-husband team (The Silver Gryphon, 1996, etc.). Chronologically, this follows the events of Storm Breaking (not reviewed), but it's otherwise unconnected. Young orphan Darian lives on the edge of the vast Pelagiris forest. Though apprenticed to the wise old wizard Justyn, he's contemptuous of magic in general and unwilling to make the effort to develop his own talents. When invading barbarians burn the village and kill Justyn, Darian flees into the forest and meets the Hawkbrothers, a magical elflike race who bond with birds and bear such names as Snowfire, Starfall, and Nightwind. What ensues is a standard coming-of-age fantasy involving the usual Lackey and Dixon suspects (yes, of course, gryphons). Should entertain the more junior and unsuspecting sections of the audience. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
Owlknight (Darian's Tale 3)
Auteur(s): Mercedes Lackey, Larry Dixon
Editeur: DAW Books
Genre: Fantastic
Série: Valdemar 25
Résumé: Owlknight follows Mercedes Lackey and Larry Dixon's two earlier novels about Darian Firkin, Owlflight and Owlsight. By now the boy who ran from barbarian invaders is both knight of Valdemar and a master mage; he is governor of a small province and in love with Keisha who returns his feelings, but he still has problems and responsibilities. For one thing, he has never solved the mystery of what happened to his parents. For another, Keisha refuses to marry him lest his role as governor and hers of healer come into conflict--and there are still barbarians beyond the border who threaten one day to come back.
The story of how these problems are all resolved is told in a quiet tone unusual in this sort of epic fantasy. Darian has as much to look within for the solution to these issues as to struggle in the outside world. The woodland journey during which he does this is much of the time a celebration of the renewal of the human soul by the natural world.
Lackey and Dixon have found a courtly, meditative way of telling an attractively simple story. Darian's growth to final maturity is inevitable, but still fascinating. --Roz Kaveney, Amazon.co.uk

Résumé: From Booklist
The popular husband-and-wife team here launch yet another trilogy laid in their best-known creation, the world of Valdemar, with a book that is considerably more accessible for readers new to Valdemar than many another in the several overlapping triptychs. The action begins during the recovery of Valdemar from the traumatic events of the Mage Storms trilogy completed by Storm Breaking (1996). The story is basically about the coming-of-age of Keisha, an untrained healer in a remote village who is trying to care for her people without going mad, and Darian, a young mage turned Hawkbrother who has figured in other Valdemar yarns. Together, Keisha and Darian take active part in the rebuilding of Valdemar. Lackey and Dixon may not develop their protagonists as remarkably as does Lois Bujold, whose characters grow astonishingly from book to book, or Andre Norton, who has been ringing changes on classic motifs for a half century. Nevertheless, although Lackey and Dixon tend to repeat themselves, they always offer a well-told tale. Roland Green--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

This high-quality anthology mixes pieces by experienced authors and enthusiastic fans of editor Lackey's Valdemar. The stories range throughout the entire history of Valdemar, from the Mage Wars on, and display charm, imagination, and honest sentiment. The title story, by Lackey, is an interesting epilogue to two of her recent novels, Exile's Honor [BKL S 15 02] and Exile's Valor [BKL O 15 03]. Other notable efforts by professionals are Nancy Asire's "The Cat Who Came to Dinner" (Valdemar fandom is definitely biased toward feline fanciers); "In the Eye of the Beholder," by Josepha Sherman; and "Icebreaker," by Rosemary Edghill. Fans' work includes Michael Longcor's "True Colors," in which one may detect the influence of his background in the famed fantasy-world realization affiliation, the Society for Creative Anachronism, and "Errold's Journey" by Catherine S. McMullen, a 12-year-old who well may have a long career ahead of her. Valdemar fandom, especially, will revel in this sterling example of what such a mixture of fans' and pros' work can be. A Shadow on the Glass

Série: View from the mirror 1
Résumé: Magic pathways from world to world were a curse, making possible invasion and enslavement, and long ago those paths were closed leaving three worlds and the void between them a hopeless jumble of what had been and what is now. Ian Irvine's "A Shadow on the Glass", first volume of his fantasy quartet "The View from the Mirror", takes us to one of those worlds and to two adventurers, a scholar and a psychic, who find themselves dragged into the conflicts of the mighty and the ambitious. Karan is blackmailed into helping steal a magic mirror, and finds herself on the run from warlords and warlocks; all that Llian wanted to do was find a great story to tell, and clarify some minor ambiguities in the archives of the college of storytellers--but he finds himself expelled and ostracised, and accompanying Karan on her breakneck journeys on high barrens and treacherous rivers. What Irvine brings to the mix is a sense of irony and some intelligent observation of character: Llian and Karan are not your average squeaky clean hero and heroine, and their opponents are hardly villainous, just people acting out the planned treacheries that seemed like a good idea. "--Roz Kaveney"
The Tower on the Rift
Auteur(s): Ian Irvine
Editeur: Orbit
Genre: Fantastic
Série: View from the mirror 2
Résumé: Irvine picks up the challenge of following "The Shadow on the Mirror" with great gusto in this novel. Having brought all of the major characters together for the climax of that novel, he now flings them apart again and then slowly pulls them back in together for the finale of this one. Such a tactic is extremely dangerous - but Irvine pulls it off extremely well.
The main thrust of this book is the fact that Tensor has the Mirror, has kidnapped Llian and wants to use the Mirror to enact his revenge upon Rulke. However, this main strand is intertwined with the lives, relationships and goals of all the many characters in the first book.
The pace varies wildly in the book. The first hundred pages are at breakneck speed with a huge amount of activity, then Irvine gives the reader a necessary lull, before plowing onwards again. He switches his focus from character to character with alacrity, although on one occasion it did actually become quite confusing.
The novel is mainly a picaresque one, dealing with the journeys made by the characters, but works well. It contains some very humourous moments as well as truly touching scene when the lovers are re-united. However, in areas cracks are beginning to show. The power of the "Secret Art" seems to vary wildly from chapter to chapter and the characters survive and recover from spear wounds, knife slashes, scorpion stings and falls of cliffs with such alacrity that I'm never really worried that they won't survive. Despite that, it's a great read and I'm leaping on to the third book.
