Genre: Detective
Série: A Garrett, P.I., Novel 1
Résumé: From Library Journal
Private investigator Garrett, hero of the Cantard Wars, reluctantly agrees to return to the perilous Cantard mining country in search of a missing heiress. His companions include a renegade half-elf, a trio of frog-like "grolls," and two sharp-tongued women with their own interest in the quest's successor failure. Cook's laconic style brings a dose of gritty realism to the fantasy genre. This latest adventure by the author of "The Black Company" trilogy is recommended. JC

Résumé: A stilted variation on the previous books in this excellent series. I found it difficult to become interested, as for once Cook's easy writing style seems to have deserted him. Faded Steel Heat
Auteur(s): Glen Cook
Editeur: Roc
Genre: Detective
Série: A Garrett, P.I., Novel 9
Résumé: Garrett, P.I., is a series I have followed for years. Garret is an ex-Marine who spent time in a Viet Nam type war that dragged on and on consuming more and more young men.
Now the war is over and the troops are coming back. The other races, (fairies, dwarves, ratmen, etc.) have taken the jobs and humans are being squeezed between an uncaring government and human rightsists (I fought, gimme the gold, and get lost, or else).
In this episode, the human rightsists are up against Glory Moon-called, the genius that caused the war to end. Garrett has to walk a tight rope between more clients than he ever had all of them with different agendas.
Somewhere in there is a set of shapeshifters, four or five VERY beautiful women, and a confused plot that somehow seems to work. I was unable to put it down. I kept thinking, "What the hell is going on?" Garrett didn't know, so neither did I. Oh, I forgot the beer. It's great. I mean what more could you want: Beer, babes, and bad guys?

The first book in Braun's beloved "Cat Who" series is being reissued in hardcover after a wait of over 30 years.

From Kirkus Reviews
A new hardcover edition (after Dutton's in 1966) of the first in a series that now totals 19 (The Cat Who Tailed a Thief, 1997, etc.). Here, Braun introduces Jim Qwilleran, a prizewinning reporter who's been on the skids but is now coming back with a job as feature writer (mostly on the art scene) for the Daily Fluxion. George Bonifield Mountclemens, the paper's credentialed art critic, writes almost invariably scathing, hurtful reviews of local shows; delivers his pieces by messenger; lives with his all-knowing cat Koko in a lushly furnished house in a moldering neighborhood, and has a raft of enemies all over town. He offers the newcomer a tiny apartment in his building at a nominal rent, and Qwilleran grabs it, surmising the deal will involve lots of cat-sitting. Meanwhile, a gallery whose artists get happier treatment from Mountclemens is owned by Earl Lambreth. The acerbic critic has praised paintings there by a reclusive Italian named Scrano; the junk assemblages of Nino, who calls himself a ``Thingist,'' as well as works by Lambreth's attractive wife Zoe. It's Zoe who, one night past closing, finds her husband stabbed to death in the vandalized gallery. Days later, Qwilleran, guided by an insistent Koko, finds Mountclemens's knifed corpse on the patio behind his house. It takes a while to put the meandering pieces together and to uncover an overriding motive behind the mayhem, but the best things here are Qwilleran's low-keyed charisma and the author's well- aimed, often funny barbs at the pretensions of the contemporary art world--as on-target today as they were some 30 years ago. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. Vastly wealthy due to his inheritance of the Klingenschoen estate in Pickax City way up North, Jim Qwilleran now enjoys the eccentricities of life in Moose County. Series fans will know about his pampered pair of Siamese cats; Koko, the male, pushes various Shakespeare plays off the shelf in Qwilleran's library, presumably commenting on events that excite and scandalize the town: the "accidental" death of the newspaper publisher, the disastrous fire that destroys the office, etc. A comfortable, quaint diversion, with interesting character names, wry remarks about feline behavior, and a deus ex machina protagonist. The Cat Who Went Underground
Auteur(s): Lilian Jackson Braun
Editeur: Jove
Genre: Detective
Série: A Jim Qwilleran Feline Whodunnit 9
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
While the 10th entry in the "Cat Who" series is enjoyable and has its charms, it is less a mystery than a recital of how veteran reporter and millionaire Jim Qwilleran and his feline companions, Koko and Yum Yum, spent their vacation, and an account of the people they encountered. Moreover, most of the plot development occurs near the end, so the denouement appears contrived. Fiftyish bachelor "Qwill" decides to spend the summer at a lakefront cottage near the resort town of Mooseville. His vision of an idyllic respite is shattered from the moment he arrives. Almost everything in the house needs repair and Qwill could use more space; adding a wing is the logical solution, but he learns that most such jobs are done by itinerant builders. Fortunately, Clem Cottle, a local handyman, accepts the project, but he soon disappears, the third carpenter in recent months to vanish; two others met with fatal freak accidents. When Clem's replacement, Iggy Small, misses work, and his corpse is found in Qwill's basement, our vacationing hero suspects a serial killer and begins to investigate. Of course, the intelligent Koko helps solve the crime. For inveterate Braun ( The Cat Who Sniffed Glue ) fans only. Mystery Guild main selection, Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternate selections.

The Cat Who Talked to Ghosts
Auteur(s): Lilian Jackson Braun
Editeur: Headline Book Pub Ltd
Genre: Detective
Série: A Jim Qwilleran Feline Whodunnit 10
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Jackson's 10th entry in the series featuring middle-aged, curmudgeonly reporter Jim Qwilleran pits the independently wealthy citizen of the remote town of Pickax City against malevolent spirits, of either this world or another. Iris Cobb, the resident-curator of the local historical museum, tells Qwill she's hearing ghosts; after she dies of what the coroner says is a heart attack, Qwill and his Siamese cats, Yum Yum and the psychic zany Koko, move in to find out what could have scared her to death. Unearthing old and well-kept secrets in Moose County family histories, Qwill also investigates some newcomers to the area, notably the museum's neighbors down the road at Fugtree Farm, and the deceased's son whose inheritance is considerable. Fans of earlier The Cat Who . . . stories may welcome Qwill's return along with other Pickax regulars such as librarian Polly Duncan and Arch Riker, editor of the weekly Moose County Something , but as a mystery, this busy, superficial and weakly plotted tale is as unsubstantial as any ghost and much less haunting. Mystery Guild selection; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternate.

The Cat Who Lived High

Editeur: Jove
Genre: Detective
Série: A Jim Qwilleran Feline Whodunnit 11
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
With this 11th entry, the popular Cat Who series ( The Cat Who Talked to Ghosts ) begins to flag, its charms growing tatty and listless for even the most steadfast cat-and-mystery lovers. Ex-newspaperman James "Qwill" Qwilleran and his Siamese Koko and Yum Yum leave Moose County for the big city Down Below to help old friends save the Casablanca, an aging and elegant apartment building threatened with demolition to make way for profitable development. Qwill decides to spend the winter in the Casablanca to determine if it might make a project for the philanthropic Klingenschoen Fund, which he controls. Ensconced in a 14th-floor penthouse, he discovers that its previous tenant, Dianne Bessinger, head of the group trying to save the building, was an art dealer ostensibly murdered by a jealous protegeok . Qwill also plays Scrabble with the building's owner, the eccentric and reclusive Countess; he teaches the game to Koko, who thereby provides him with clues in his investigation of the murder, which he suspects is tied to attempts against the Casablanca. Braun's latest pleases with its descriptions of gentrification and development, but the book ends abruptly, leaving too many loose ends, and central characters Koko and Yum Yum develop no further at all.

The Cat Who Knew a Cardinal
Auteur(s): Lilian Jackson Braun
Editeur: Headline Book Pub Ltd
Genre: Detective
Série: A Jim Qwilleran Feline Whodunnit 12
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Like news from Lake Wobegon, Braun's Cat Who . . . series featuring retired journalist and heir Jim Qwilleran and his Siamese cats Koko and Yum Yum has charmed readers, and this 12th installment about events in mythical Pickax City is no exception. Qwill and cats move into an antique apple barn renovated by building contractor (and amateur actor) Dennis Hough. Concurrently the Pickax Theatre Club stages Henry VIII , with Hilary VanBrook, the unlikable but talented new high school principal, directing and playing the plum role of Cardinal Wolsey and a woman from neighboring Lockmaster (instead of a Pickaxian) controversially cast as Queen Katharine. When VanBrook is murdered in his car after a closing night party at Qwill's new home, Qwill looks into VanBrook's past while the police investigate his death. Local suspicion falls on Hough, the newest member of the community, but he is found hanged in the apple barn, and Qwill doubts that it's suicide. Koko and Yum Yum once again help Qwill identify the culprit via whisker twitches and tail wags. Series fans and newcomers alike will purr with delight. Mystery Guild main selection; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternates.

From School Library Journal
YA-- Koko and Yum Yum cavort again, this time to help Qwill solve the puzzling, untimely deaths at their new home, a cavernous barn complete with picture windows from which the two cats watch the neighborhood birds. This highly entertaining novel is sure to please all who want a light mystery. Cat lovers particularly will enjoy the antics of the feline heroes, while others will appreciate the creative solution that grows out of seemingly unrelated clues. Qwill, a semi-retired newspaper writer, is owned by the cats and provides needed assistance as a sleuth. Relaxed, rural America is well drawn (except for the number of murders it has had since the series moved to this locale) and provides a delightful setting in this amusing romp that's perhaps Braun's best. --Claudia Moore, W. Série: A Jim Qwilleran Feline Whodunnit 13
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
This droll and engaging mystery, 13th in The Cat Who . . . series, firmly grips the reader even though the murder in question is a year old and the killer is apparently behind bars. Jim Qwilleran, an affable former big-city crime reporter who has just inherited a considerable fortune, heads for a vacation in the rustic Potato Mountains to ponder the future course of his life. Accompanied by his two omniscient felines, Koko and Yum Yum, he takes up residence in the former home of the town's leading citizen, J.J. Hawkinfield, murdered one year ago. The sheriff tells Qwilleran that the deceased, a believer in unfettered development of the area, was killed by one of the more militant mountain people, who oppose land sales and want to protect their rural environment. Under the pretext of researching Hawkinfield's biography, Qwilleran pries into everyone's business, aided by the garrulous residents, who raise gossip to a new art form. With the help of his unique cats, he uncovers new evidence and brings to a satisfying conclusion a lively, witty tale bolstered by sharply etched characters. The Cat Who Wasn't There
Auteur(s): Lilian Jackson Braun
Editeur: Headline Book Pub Ltd
Genre: Detective
Série: A Jim Qwilleran Feline Whodunnit 14
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Pickax City columnist and wealthy bachelor Jim Qwilleran travels to Scotland, leaving his Siamese cats Koko and Yum Yum at home, in one of the most lively recent entries in Braun's popular "The Cat Who . . . " series. Also on the Bonnie Scots Tour are Qwill's current woman friend, Polly Duncan, the Moose County librarian; and his recently returned former girlfriend, Dr. Melinda Goodwinter, who proposes marriage. Tour leader Irma Hasselrich (a friend of Polly's and a patient of Melinda's) dies of apparently natural causes; then a jewel case and the tour-bus driver disappear. Qwill, Polly and Melinda decamp the tour early; back in Pickax City, listening to tape recordings he made along the way--and to Koko's intuitive yowls--Qwill begins to suspect that Irma was murdered. Convincing others, however, takes time and an investigation. Although the cats play a smaller role in this installment than in previous ones, Braun's descriptions of Scottish lore and the complications of Qwill's love life will enchant fans. Mystery Guild selection; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club alternates; audio rights to Dove.

From Kirkus Reviews
The 15th outing for Pickax City newspaper pundit and zillionaire Jim Qwilleran and his Siamese housemates, Koko and Yum Yum, travels from Moose County to Hibernia and back again as it dwells on Qwill's Scottish ancestry; the identity of the prowler sniffing around his lover, Polly the librarian; and the attempts of his former lover, Melinda, to rekindle their romance (with dire results) while on a Highland Tour with them and 13 other Pickax friends. The friends include the teddy-bear-collecting Chisholm sisters; cranky, outspoken Amanda Goodwinter (who ``drank a little''); several stalwarts of Pickax's little theater group; and pushy tour-guide Irma Hasselrich, who disrupts everyone's holiday by dying in bed--from unnatural causes. Nice scenery, interesting historical tidbits, and far-fetched- -in fact, farcical--motivation for murder, but die-hards and readers new to the series will have a rare glimpse of Qwill and Koko behaving most ungentlemanly-like toward the ladies. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. The Cat Who Went into the Closet

Série: A Jim Qwilleran Feline Whodunnit 15
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Newspaperman, philanthropist and sleuth Jim Qwilleran leads a busy life in tiny Pickax City (pop. 3,000), but it is his prescient cats who beguile the reader in this lively mystery, the 16th in the Cat Who. . . series. Qwilleran is renting a huge but empty mansion from Junior Goodwinter, his managing editor, who inherited the white elephant from his feisty 88-year-old grandmother Euphonia Gage when she went to live in a Florida retirement community. When Euphonia is found dead, apparently a suicide, Junior is perplexed. He is still more confounded when her new will suggests that Grandma has gambled away her millions at the racetrack. The death of a local man whose wife was Euphonia's housekeeper raises the suspicions of the already skeptical Qwilleran. He sets up a sting operation with a lively Florida retiree, but his two best operatives are his Siamese cats, Koko and Yum Yum. Qwilleran, who can be gloomy, peevish, vain and demanding, is never dull. Other industrious inhabitants of Pickax City (an editor, a waitress, a dog trainer) are comparably unique and have enough sharp edges to avoid being cute. Of course, the cats get all the best lines. Mystery Guild selection.

In the 16th Cat Who . . . adventure, Pickax City's Jim Qwilleran and his intuitive Siamese cats, Yum Yum and Koko, investigate odd accidents plaguing a glitzy resort recently built on a nearby island in Moose County, "400 miles north of everywhere." As Breakfast Island undergoes development which highlights its possible pirate past, retired reporter Qwill and others bemoan the spoiling of its natural beauty. After an episode of food poisoning and an accidental drowning at the resort hotel, the owners of the Domino Inn, an already established bed-and-breakfast, ask Qwill to find out whether disgruntled locals are trying to discourage tourism. On the day that Qwill moves himself and the cats into one of the Inn's cottages, another guest is injured on the Inn's front steps and an explosion in the resort's marina kills a yacht owner. Questioning reticent natives and resort employees, Qwill enlists an informant to speak with witnesses of the accidents. He himself talks with the vague proprietor of a resort antique shop filled with overpriced items. But it is Yum Yum's domino playing that sets the former newsman on the right track. Editeur: Gardners Books
Genre: Detective
Série: A Jim Qwilleran Feline Whodunnit 19
Résumé: Lillian Jackson Braun never seems to run out of ideas for her popular series of mysteries featuring journalist Jim Qwilleran and his feline cohort, Koko. In this latest, The Cat Who Tailed A Thief, Koko again exhibits her preternatural intelligence by trying to tip off Qwilleran to important clues to a murder. That Qwilleran is not possessed of the same mental acuity as his cat is what makes this series work. Braun may not be noted for refined prose, perceptive characterizations, or stunningly original plots, but what she does do well is cats. Fans of felines in general and Koko in particular will find this book, the 19th in the Qwilleran series, almost as irresistible as, well, catnip. Some would even say it's purr-fect.

When Koko begins knocking books off the library shelf, Jim knows that his feline is once again using his unusual talents to prophesy future events of the murderous kind. Taking hints from the cat, and clues from the murder of his elderly neighbor and the disappearance of a young artist, the man sorts out the motive for and perpetrator behind the mayhem. By providing background on the various characters and their relationships and mentioning previous events, the author makes sure that even first timers to the series can enjoy this title. The strongly defined personalities of the main characters lend interest and the plot has realistic complexities that assure a steady turning of pages. Braun's use of details and discussions about everyday events enhances the feeling of community interconnections and concerns. Koko's quirky predictions and other cat-ly antics add spice to an already enticing mystery. A light, entertaining whodunit that offers the added appeal of cats and their often mysterious ways.

More dire doings in Pickax (``400 miles north of everywhere''), where bachelor zillionaire Jim Qwilleran keeps a paternalistic eye on the town from his opulent barn house and his columnist job on Moose County Something, the local paper. Pickax has been saddened by the death of 93-year-old recluse Maude Coggin in a supposedly accidental fire in her decrepit house soon after she'd sold her hundred-acre farm, at a giveaway price, to buyers called Northern Land Improvement. Qwill's suspicions of this deal, reinforced by prescient cats Koko and Yum Yum, lead to his finding the company nonexistent. Some big-time chicanery is afoot, not to mention other odd happenings: a break-in and theft at the recently opened art center; an old scandal new to Qwill; the misgivings of boutique owner Elizabeth Hart about her boyfriend Derek's being offered a job as manager of Chet's Barbecuea downscale bar owned by town councilman Chet Ramsbottom. And then there's young butterfly-breeder Phoebe Sloan, whose unsavory boyfriend Jake is bartender at Chet's. When the town's major annual event takes placeit's a spelling beePhoebe is missing from her team. With help from Qwill and, of course, Koko and Yum Yum, the discovery of her body in Bloody Creek brings about the downfall of Pickax's corrupting elements. Braun's terminally arch mixture (The Cat Who Could Read Backwards, 1997, etc.) is even more extreme than before as confusion reigns, characters proliferate, and Qwill, with his second-sighted assistants, once more solves Pickax's problems. -- Copyright ©1998, Kirkus Associates, LP. The Cat Who Robbed a Bank

Editeur: Gardners Books
Genre: Detective
Série: A Jim Qwilleran Feline Whodunnit 22
Résumé: Qwilleran and his crime-solving Siamese cats KoKo and Yum Yum are back on the case in Pickax, the biggest little city in Moose County, which is 400 miles north of everywhere but still boasts a remarkably sophisticated social and cultural scene. Hardly a day or a night goes by without a tea, dinner party, crafts fair, play, or pageant, all of which are attended and described in great detail by Qwilleran, a former crime reporter whose not very onerous duties entail writing a feature column for the local newspaper as well as overseeing the civic philanthropy made possible by an inheritance from a wealthy friend of his deceased mother. Fans of this long-running and immensely popular series will delight in this 23rd installment, in which the matrons of Pickax are buying French perfume and blueing their hair for the annual visit of Mr. Delacamp, a jeweler from Down Under (Chicago), whose arrival will coincide with the reopening of the town's fabulously refurbished grand hotel. When the mysterious Mr. Delacamp is found dead in the presidential suite, and his "niece" goes missing along with the jewels and the cash, Qwilleran and his curious cats investigate. As usual, it takes a couple of Siamese with extraordinary powers (even for cats) and a current preoccupation with pennies, gum wrappers, and paper towels to point their owner toward the solution; Qwilleran may not be the quickest sleuth in Moose County, but with KoKo and Yum Yum on the case, he doesn't need to be. This is the coziest of cozies, a particular niche in the mystery subcategory of crime-solving felines of which Braun is the acknowledged mistress, and once again she delivers the goods. --Jane Adams
The Cat Who Smelled a Rat
Auteur(s): Lilian Jackson Braun
Editeur: Gardners Books
Genre: Detective
Série: A Jim Qwilleran Feline Whodunnit 23
Résumé: Moose County journalist and philanthropist James Qwilleran, better known to fans of Lilian Jackson Braun's evergreen series of feline-inspired thrillers as the owner of a couple of remarkably prescient Siamese cats named Koko and Yum Yum, is comfortably ensconced in his winter residence in Pickax at the beginning of The Cat Who Smelled a Rat. But he and the other citizens start hoping for snow when a series of arson fires threaten their safety as well as the historically significant shafthouses that sit atop the long-closed mine sites scattered throughout the county.
Qwilleran and his pets take quite a while to connect the fires with the death of a local builder in a seemingly unrelated accident. But his leisurely jaunt to the conclusion of this lightly plotted adventure leaves plenty of room for the author to do what she does best, which is sketching the picaresque characters who people Pickax and dwelling on the small-town charms of a place where everybody knows everything about everybody. The cats are quicker to solve a crime than the local constabulary. Only Koko could find the clues hidden in an antique pitcher and an old-fashioned glove box, and only a cat lover could consider this a mystery or even a romance. There's no suspense, very little drama, hardly any blood, and not even a hint of sex between Qwilleran and his lady. But Braun's fans are legion, so we know she must be doing something right. --Jane Adams
The Cat Who Went Up the Creek

Série: A Jim Qwilleran Feline Whodunnit 24
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
In Braun's 24th Cat Who... mystery (after 2001's The Cat Who Smelled a Rat), journalist James Mackintosh "Qwill" Qwilleran ("the richest man in the northeast central United States") and his two Siamese cats, Kao K'o Kung ("Koko") and Yum Yum, find themselves in the thick of another light and lively murder investigation in rural Moose County. When Lori Bamba, the new manager with her husband of the Nutcracker Inn in Black Creek, complains that the old place is haunted and making her feel gloomy, Qwill agrees to spend several nights with his cats at the converted Victorian mansion. Koko's noise gets them moved from the turret room, where the cats like to watch squirrels, to a cabin recently vacated because its occupant was murdered. Koko stumbles on a clue to the murder, while Qwill locates the source of the inn's haunting. In the meantime, Qwill's need for material for his newspaper column prompts him to help promote many local activities: the production of a Gilbert and Sullivan opera, a historical re-enactment of a lumberjack's rowdy evening, the opening of an antiques fair and mall, the launching of a book of photographs of scenic Moose County, the adoption of a boy orphaned by a suicide and another murder. As usual, the various mysteries and their ultimate solutions matter a lot less than the smalltown doings of the author's irresistible characters, both human and feline. This gentle, entertaining tale is proof once again that Braun reigns supreme as the queen of the cat cozies. (Jan. 14)Forecast: A consistent bestseller, Braun should once again climb the charts with her winning combination of cats and crime.

The Cat Who Brought Down the House

Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Guidall, the veteran audio reader who's read countless Cat Who books, returns for another foray into the goings-on in the tiny town of Pickax, "400 miles from anywhere." Guidall's versatile voice creates a whole town of characters: a glamorous, pretentious interior designer; a fluttery librarian; gravelly columnist James Quilleran (the protagonist); and a new character, elderly Thelma Thackeray, a former Moose County resident returning after six decades in Hollywood. As usual, the mild mystery (who kidnapped Thelma's prize parrots; and was the death of Thelma's brother, an elderly veterinarian, from natural causes or by murder?) takes a backseat to the pleasure of simply spending time in the company of dry, witty Quilleran, his clever cats Yum-Yum and Koko and his eccentric friends and neighbors. Fans of the series will happily settle down with headphones for this 25th entry.

This is the twenty-fifth volume of these intensely mild-mannered mysteries: it is hard to conceive of a more dulcet whodunit. Local columnist Qwilleran--Qwill, our hero--is immensely wealthy but funnels it through a foundation; lives in Pickax, Moose County, 400 miles north of anywhere; and dates the town librarian (although she's about to throw that over because libraries aren't about books anymore; Qwill's foundation is going to set her up in a bookstore). Thelma Thackeray, in her 80s, comes back to Pickax after a long Hollywood career in food. She's turning the old opera house into a revival movie theater, sparks a few other local delights, but can't seem to get her ne'er-do-well nephew to do well at all. Qwill plugs away at old lies and a death in Thelma' s family. We learn stuff through his newspaper column and his journal entries, and through the responses of his Siamese cat, Koko. All the murders are offstage: the fun part is in food, clothing, and the quotidian joys of small-town life; there's no sex and barely a whiff of technology. How can one fail to be amused by naming conventions that include local weatherman Wetherby Goode? GraceAnne DeCandido

The Cat Who Talked Turkey

Editeur: Gardners Books
Genre: Detective
Série: A Jim Qwilleran Feline Whodunnit 26
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Like other recent books in Braun's best-selling series that began with The Cat Who Could Read Backwards (1966), this loosely plotted novel, the 26th to feature Siamese cats Koko and Yum Yum and Moose County journalist Jim Qwilleran, isn't quite up to the standard of earlier entries, but it still provides plenty of escapist fun. The shooting death of a well-dressed gentleman in the woods on Qwill's property is nearly neglected in the fuss and excitement engendered by the neighboring town of Brrr's bicentennial. On the trail of a story for the celebration, Qwill interviews Edythe Carroll, a wealthy widow who has retired to Ittibittiwassee Estates from the magnificent mansion she plans to leave to her granddaughter, Lish (short for Alicia). Little does Edythe know that Lish and her boyfriend, Lush, have already trashed the place. After dozing off in his gazebo after a busy day, Qwill is startled awake by strange noises, including some coming from Koko. Enter an entire family of wild turkeys. If this all sounds like a bit of a ramble, it's quite in keeping with the story, which wanders pleasantly around Moose County, surveying its eccentric citizens as they go about their idiosyncratic business. In spite of two murders and a pair of villains, the tale is as cozy as an hour spent cuddling your favorite cat.

This is the twenty-sixth in the popular Cat Who series, featuring a psychic Siamese cat and a rustic but dapper newspaper columnist. In this latest story little attention is paid to the art of crime detection. No one cares about a couple of bodies in the woods. The real story is about opening a new bookstore, planning for a bicentennial, chasing wild turkeys, and producing a play about a devastating storm of 1913. What keeps the series popular are the local characters, the cats, and protagonist Quill, who is lively, wise, and funny. George Guidall does his usual superb job of bringing alive Quill, the good citizens of Mooseville, and even the cats. (His portrayal of Koko's yowls is worth listening for.) These episodes of life in the North have much of the same bucolic humor we enjoy in "The News from Lake Wobegon." The Cat Who Went Bananas
Auteur(s): Lilian Jackson Braun
Editeur: Gardners Books
Genre: Detective
Série: A Jim Qwilleran Feline Whodunnit 27
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Bestseller Braun's formulaic 27th Cat Who... mystery (after 2004's The Cat Who Talked Turkey) lacks the charm of earlier adventures starring Siamese sleuths Koko and Yum Yum. In Pickax City, "400 miles north of everywhere," Jim Qwilleran, the semiretired gentleman columnist for the Moose County Something, is content to court longtime gal pal Polly Duncan while overseeing his philanthropic Klingenschoen Fund, which is bankrolling the Pirate's Chest, a new bookstore built to replace an old landmark. The arrival of talented thespian Alden Wade, a handsome widower who's to play Jack Worthing in a local production of The Importance of Being Earnest, threatens to enliven the proceedings and add tension to Qwill and Polly's peculiar, passionless relationship, until Alden's sudden marriage to the local Hibbard House heiress. Preparations for the Wilde play's opening and references to the Hibbard House history that Qwill is writing don't have much to do with the unsolved murder of Alden's first wife via a sniper's bullet. Once noted for its fine style, great characterizations and clever cat crime-solving, this cozy series has become a shadow of its former self.

For listeners who enjoy hearing George Guidall read a book, this latest in the "Cat Who" mystery series is a pleasure. He distinguishes the characters with his characteristic panache in this mystery from Moose County, "400 miles north of everywhere." His voice has just the hint of gravel one would expect to find in a backcountry storyteller. But to fans of mystery, this might be a title to avoid. The author sets up the premise effectively; a slick newcomer with a shady past arrives in town just as a new bookstore opens and a valuable rare book disappears. But Braun ends the story abruptly, wrapping things up in a providential coincidence, with no identity of the guilty party or motivation for the crime given. Listen to this book for the narrator, not the story. R.C.G. © AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine--This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Absolution by Murder
Auteur(s): Peter Tremayne
Editeur: Gardners Books
Genre: Detective
Série: A Sister Fidelma Mystery / Celtic Mystery 1
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
This immensely appealing launch of a new series is set in seventh-century Ireland, which in Tremayne's rendering is a golden age of enlightenment and of total equality for women. Such narrative stumbling blocks as an abundance of stereotypical characters and much more dynastic trivia, ecclesiastical and secular history than can be absorbed are offset by the vigorous, intriguing puzzle posed by a series of murders and by Sister Fidelma, the tale's brilliant and beguiling heroine. An ecclesiastical conclave to settle major divisions between the Roman and Celtic branch of Christianity is held at Whitby in 664. When a major proponent of the Celtic way, the Abbess of Kildare, is murdered, Sister Fidelma, a fellow Celtic follower and legally trained scholar, is asked to investigate. She is paired with her ideological opposite, Brother Eadulf, on the Roman side, who is shrewd, highly educated and immediately smitten with the outspoken sister. The intellectual and physical sparks that are ignited between these two clerics (in an age before celibacy) light up the pages, and when two monks are killed and the malevolence thickens, the book becomes difficult to put down. It is reassuring to read that Sister Fidelma and Brother Eadulf will reappear... next time in Rome.

Subtle Serpent (The)
Auteur(s): Peter Tremayne
Editeur: Gardners Books
Genre: Detective
Série: A Sister Fidelma Mystery / Celtic Mystery 4
Résumé: Seventh century Ireland provides the background in Peter Tremayne's newest murder mystery which begins gruesomely as two nuns pull a decapitated corpse from their drinking well. Sister Fidelma is called upon to determine who the body is and how she met her untimely end. Fidelma, as an advocate of the courts, is the appropriate person to collect evidence and determine if there is a case to be answered. Although Tremayne makes clear in his introduction that women under Irish law in the period aspired to and performed most professions on a similar footing with men, he does not neglect the opportunity to place Fidelma in situations where both her youth and gender raise the question of her suitability for her official capacity. Still, her enjoyment in convincing her doubters of her abilities and her ultimate success indicate, as Tremayne evidently intends, that this particular period, at least as Ireland as concerned, should not be characterized as a dark one.
En route to the scene of the crime that opens the story, Sister Fidelma encounters a second curiosity, a ship foundering in the waves without a person on board. What Fidelma does discover are hints that an old and trusted friend was aboard and seems to have met the same mysterious fate as the rest of the crew and cargo, whatever that might have been. The novel proceeds as Fidelma sets out to determine the cause of each of her mysteries, and what if any is the connection between them. Tremayne is a careful and engaging storyteller; his characters are thoughtfully drawn, and he uses the central mystery for them to discuss and reflect upon the differences between the native Irish church and that of Rome (which is becoming the more powerful--and whose ultimate success will keep women like Fidelma out of the halls of power which she has confidently and capably strode.)
The ecclesiastical period setting may remind readers of the work of Ellis Peters, but the 7th century is distinct from the 12th and Ireland distinct from England. Tremayne relishes those differences, creating a tale that has much to enlighten and intrigue his readers and make them anxious for the next time Sister Fidelma is called to perform her duties.

Editeur: Gardners Books
Genre: Detective
Série: A Sister Fidelma Mystery / Celtic Mystery 5
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Rich with Irish lore, Tremayne's fifth entry in his Sister Fidelma series (following The Subtle Serpent) introduces readers to further Celtic law, religion and mores in a multilayered search for a cold-blooded killer. In A.D. 668, Fidelma, an advocate in the law courts of Ireland, is sent by her brother, the king of Muman, to investigate the murder of a Celtic chieftain. Though a blind, deaf mute named M?en was found holding a bloody knife near the chieftain's corpse, Fidelma and her Saxon friend Eadulf are not convinced that the man is guilty. For one thing, M?en is also supposed to have killed the chieftain's sister, who raised M?en since he was a babe, and Fidelma finds it hard to believe that in one night the blind deaf-mute would slay the two people in his compound who had befriended him. As Fidelma and Eadulf scrutinize the evidence, they cast about for other suspects among the chieftain's family and subjects. They find a daughter who hated her father and quickly took power after his death, a wife who scorned her husband, a cleric whose religion leans toward Roman practices and a wealthy cousin who assumed that he was the chieftain's heir. Despite several threats to their lives, the sleuthing sister and her sidekick persist and finally ferret out the culprit. In painstaking detail, Tremayne follows Fidelma's careful analysis of the facts while spicing the narrative with asides on the battle between Roman Catholic and Celtic views of theology and law. Though the secondary characters lack complexity, Fidelma's own is strong enough to carry the story, albeit slowly, to its finale.

From Booklist
While most of seventh-century Europe was shrouded in intellectual darkness, Ireland enjoyed a period of unprecedented enlightenment. During this era, Irish universities flourished and women were accorded the same rights, protections, and professional responsibilities as men. As an advocate of the seventh-century Brehon courts, Tremayne's Sister Fedelma, a legal scholar and expert in both criminal and civil codes, is once again charged with the task of gathering and assessing the evidence in a perplexing murder case. When Eber, chieftain of the rural outpost of Araglin, is brutally stabbed to death, Fedelma's brother, the king of Muman, requests that she undertake an investigation and see that justice is dispensed. Though most of Eber's clansmen are eager to implicate a defenseless deaf-mute in the homicide, Fedelma exposes an array of suspects and motives. As she delves deeper into the past, she uncovers a shocking family secret and a tangled web of hatred, deceit, and greed. Margaret Flanagan--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Sister Fidelma, seventh-century religieuse and advocate of the Brehon courts of medieval Ireland, returns in the latest chapter of one of the most suspenseful and intelligent series of historical mysteries. Traveling with Brother Eadulf, her faithful companion and ever-hopeful love interest (the concept of celibacy was alien to the ancient Celtic Church), Fidelma sets out to visit the new archbishop of Canterbury. Blown off course by a raging storm, their ship sails into the Breton kingdom of Dyfed and straight into a particularly puzzling dual mystery. Charged by the local king to investigate the perplexing disappearance of an entire monastic community, Fidelma and Eadulf are also intrigued by the brutal rape and murder of a young local girl. As they begin to unravel two separate crimes, it becomes increasingly clear that the strands of each need to be interwoven to expose a diabolically clever scheme. Tremayne continues to challenge readers with a compelling combination of church, cultural, and legal history, buttressed by intriguingly complex plots and a superlative cast of sympathetic characters. Returning characters Lirael, former Second Assistant Librarian of the Clayr and now an Abhorsen-in-Waiting (the Abhorsen's "birthright and charge [is] to maintain the borders of Life and Death"), and her nephew, Prince Sameth, along with Disreputable Dog and the mysterious white cat, Mogget, are ensorcelled in the Abhorsen House by a Dead creature, Chlorr of the Mask, who is in league with the evil necromancer Hedge. They break out to try and rescue Sam's old friend, Nicholas Sayre, who has been tricked by Hedge into digging up Orannis, the Destroyer; if Hedge's plan succeeds, the evil now contained by two separate hemispheres will join and annihilate all life. The grotesque imagery of the Death realm provides a haunting note, which Nix offsets by the brightness of the main characters' quest to defeat the Destroyer. At once an allegory regarding war and peace and a testament to friendship, this thought-provoking fantasy also resolves the true identities of the popular Dog and Mogget characters-and suggests that Nix may still have more tricks up his sleeve. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up-Garth Nix's trilogy comes to a dramatic and apocalyptic close, with all the clever plot twists and inventive voicings by Tim Curry that made Sabriel and Lirael (both 2002) award winners. In this segment, both Sabriel and Lirael, the latter now elevated to the powerful rank of Abhorsen (a kind of magician) in Nix's parallel world, have important roles-but so do Sabriel's son Sam, Mog the cat, and a ubiquitous and charming creature known affectionately as the "disreputable dog." Nix's imagined world seems to be situated near the time of our own turn from 19th to 20th century, the perfect backdrop for a classic theme, played out refreshingly within this story: the perils and the promises of technology. Magic, the antithesis of human ingenuity, flows both for the good and against it. The forces of evil are able to swell the ranks of their army through the recycling of dead folks into almost-invulnerable foot soldiers. Besides death and the good vs evil struggle, another folk motif brought into focus here is that of friendship: Sam's lifelong friend, Nicholas, literally must lay down his life in the course of the action. Abhorsen is an excellent denouement for a fantasy that is both literary and popularly accessible. Out loud, the powers of this future classic are intensified, especially through Curry's inspired dramatization.

Creature in the Case (The)
Auteur(s): Garth Nix
Editeur: HarperCollinsChildren'sBooks
Genre: Fantastic
Série: Abhorsen 4
Résumé: Exclusive new adventure set in the Old Kingdom, set approximately six months after the events in ABHORSEN. Nicholas Sayre is still recuperating from the injuries he received at the hands of the Destroyer. But after several idle months in Ancelstierre, he is desperate to return to the Old Kingdom, so when the opportunity arrives to actually DO something, he accepts like shot. As a favour to his Uncle Edward, the Chief Minister of Ancelstierre, he travels to spend the weekend in a remote country house, the home of a family which would make a good political alliance. That seems easy enough, till he discovers that the house holds many secrets, and the worst of them is a relic of the Old Kingdom, too far from the Wall for any spark of its magical life to reignite. Unless someone finds a way to unleash its power!
Acorna's Quest
Auteur(s): Anne McCaffrey, Margaret Ball
Editeur: Eos (Harper Collins)
Genre: Fantastic
Série: Acorna 2
Résumé: This SF team's earlier novel, Acorna, introduced the alien girl Acorna, an orphan rescued and reared by space-faring humans. Though generally human-shaped, she shares some features with the unicorn of myth--notably, a forehead horn that can heal and purify. Now Acorna blasts off with human friends in search of her own race, who shortly turn up looking for her. These gentle, horned nonhumans are fleeing other aliens who are wanton murderers and torturers that resemble huge cockroaches. Meanwhile, a starship full of dispossessed human miners picks up a scientist whose devastating system of planetary weather control inspires some on-board criminals to stage a coup and use the weather machine to blackmail whole planets; Acorna stumbles into this conflict. Meanwhile, a spacefleet of killer roaches is on its way.
These storylines mix romance, light comedy, and some violent action, which is generally downplayed or dealt with offstage. Of course, the verminous villains find humanity a tougher proposition than nice unicorn-folk and complain bitterly: "They are barbaric and vicious beyond belief; when attacked, they actually fight back!" Happy endings emerge, with room for more sequels. Overall, Acorna's Quest feels like a romping, uncomplicated SF adventure intended for younger readers and Anne McCaffrey devotees. --David Langford, Amazon.co.uk

Trickster's Choice
Auteur(s): Tamora Pierce
Editeur: Random House
Genre: Fantastic
Série: Aliane, Daughter of the Lioness 1
Résumé: To the great joy of her many fans, Tamora Pierce with this book begins a new saga of Tortall to add to The Song of the Lioness Quartet, the Immortals Quartet, and The Protector of the Small tetralogy. At the center of each of these books is always a strong and resourceful young woman who masters the arts of swordplay and knightly warfare in the magical medieval country of Tortall. Alianne, or Aly, daughter of the warrior queen Alanna the Lioness, has all these skills, but also a delicious sense of humor, which serves her well when she is chosen by the trickster god Kyprioth to serve as his secret agent and a slave for a year in the embattled Copper Isles. There the dark-skinned natives, or raka, have been conquered and crushed by the laurin, light-skinned people from the mainland. The burning raka resentment is fueled by prophecies of a twice royal queen who will free them, aided by the "wise one, the cunning one, the strong one, the warrior, and the crows." Just how each of the colorful characters and Aly herself fit into this prophecy and Kyprioth’s tricky plan keeps readers guessing. Aly plots to show her skill at spying as she flirts with the god and is courted by Nawat, a crow transformed into a handsome young man, who is puzzled when she rejects his attempts to mate-feed her with grubs and ants.
The pages of this long but fast-paced adventure zip by, enlivened by intrigue, skirmishes, comedy, romance, and lots of dramatic clothes. (Ages 10 to 14) --Patty Campbell
Trickster's Queen
Auteur(s): Tamora Pierce
Editeur: Random House
Genre: Fantastic
Série: Aliane, Daughter of the Lioness 2
Résumé: From School Library Journal
Grade 7-10–In this sequel to the well-received Trickster's Choice (Random, 2003), Pierce deftly weaves an unforgettable story about Alianne (Aly) of Pirate's Swoop. As the novel opens, the wife and children of the late Duke Mequen Balitang return to the capital city of Rajmuat from their exile on their distant estate. Aly has become a maid to Lady Dovasary, daughter of the late duke, and, more importantly, she is now the spymaster of the raka rebellion that is determined to put Dovasary's sister on the throne in place of the four-year-old luarin king. The light-skinned luarin have oppressed the dark-skinned raka for centuries, and the luarin co-regents now in charge of the Copper Isles are losing their grip on reality as well as on their kingdom. With Aly in control, the raka rebellion is able to stir up enough unrest to cause the uprising to begin. Aly, who is the daughter of Alanna the Lioness of Tortall (from the "Lioness Quartet" series), is delightful in her deviousness. The teen is exceptionally brave, sassy, and diplomatic. She is surrounded by a large supporting cast, which is well developed and necessary to the story. The plot sweeps readers along in a whirlwind of court intrigue, deception, murder, and romance. The humor is wicked, and the plot twists will keep the pages turning to the supremely satisfying end. Teens will be inspired by Aly's determination, her resourcefulness, and her heart.–Anna M. From AudioFile
Pierce weaves yet another vibrant fantasy in which listeners get espionage, war strategy, and royal politics. Aly Homewood continues to plot with the Copper Isles natives to place a "raka queen" on the throne. Pierce's story is intelligent in its details of revolution, beautiful in its descriptions of exotic places and people, and emotionally charged in its tragedies and triumphs. Happily, this book gets the narrator it needs in Trini Alvarado, who provides an extensive range of expression for both males and females, human or immortal, friend or foe. Her clear speech and judicious pace guide listeners through multiple intrigues to a satisfying end. A gem. Résumé: I found both the Arcana books to be very well written, and the characters are the kind you care about. As a reader, you want the good guys to triumph over the evil doers, unlike some of the other fantasy books I've read, where you rooted for the bad guys, and wanted the good guy to meet his end in the most horrid way possible. My only problem, where the hell is the sequel? It's only been three years since the second book was first released. I really would like to find out how the story ends!!!
