Black Lotus
Auteur(s): Laura Joh Rowland
Editeur: St. Martin's Paperbacks
Genre: Detective
Série: Sano Ichiro
Résumé: Samurai detective Sano Ichiro, the hero of Laura Joh Rowland's beautifully written mysteries set in Shogun-era Japan, (The Samurai's Wife, The Concubine's Tattoo), investigates an arson murder at the Black Lotus temple, in which the only witness--a young girl who swears she doesn't remember what happened--is also the only suspect. ButSano's wife, Reiko, believes that Haru is innocent and that the real culprits are hiding behind the barred gates of the temple, home to a mysterious sect that is rumored to be responsible for a number of criminal acts. Under pressure to solve the crime, Sano agrees to let Reiko help, but when she takes matters into her own hands, it puts his career in jeopardy and nearly destroys their marriage. Who is the mysterious Abbess of the Black Lotus, and what is the sect's real goal?Is Haru the innocent youngster Reiko believes her to be, or does the evidence Sano uncovers reveal her deceitful nature and complicity in the murders of a child, a young woman, and a high-ranking police commander? As usual, Rowland turns in a brilliant re-creation of a time and place unfamiliar to most readers: the imperial court of 17th-century Japan, whose intrigues and excesses provide a fascinating backdrop for the most charming husband and wife detective team since Nick and Nora Charles. If you haven't discovered Rowland yet, Black Lotus is your opportunity; this is a series with real staying power. --Jane Adams

Résumé: From Kirkus Reviews
Military sword and sorcery, from the co-author of Kingdoms of the Night (with Allan Cole, 1995, etc.) The former kingdom of Numantia is governed by an effete oligarchy known as the Rule of Ten. As a young, untried cavalry officer, narrator Damastes is sent with his troop to escort a diplomatic mission led by the seer (magician) Tenedos into a bandit-infested border country of Kait. But opposed by Kait's greedy boss--Baber Fergana and his sorcerer, Irshad, not to mention by a powerful demon called Thak and his strangler-assassin Tovieti cult--Tenedos and Damastes barely escape with a handful of survivors. Soon, however, Thak moves into the Numantian capital, Nicias, followed rapidly by the Tovieti with their yellow silk strangling cords, while another enemy, the sorcerer Chardin Sher, brews up spells more powerful than those of Tenedos. Despite all this, the Rule of Ten refuse to take action, and Nicias is engulfed by civil war. Tenedos and Damastes have no choice but to seize control of Numantia, then face further military and sorcerous challenges before Tenedos openly declares himself emperor. A fantasy sex- and violence-fest, courtesy of Bunch's sure grasp of military history and organization, gory battles interspersed with interludes of graphic sex, and dialogue peppered with incongruous modern expletives. The text, while complete in itself, seems to promise at least one sequel. -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.--This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Heart of Myrial (The)
Auteur(s): Maggie Furey
Editeur: Time Warner Books Uk
Genre: Fantastic
Série: Shadowleague 1
Résumé: This fast-moving adventure opens Maggie Furey's second fantasy sequence, "The Shadowleague"; her first was the "Artefacts of Power" tetralogy. The Heart of Myrial is set in a particularly artificial-seeming fantasyland, which proves to be not a world but a technomagical construct, divided into isolated regions by sorcerous barriers of force. Thanks to the machinations of a bad guy who may have good motives, these "curtain walls" are now failing--the first symptoms being clashes between the enclaves' different environments, leading to prolonged descriptions of truly lousy weather. In theory the barriers are guarded by and can be penetrated only by Loremasters of the Shadowleague, a secret inner circle of representatives from this patchwork world's various species: humans, dragons, centaurs, wind-sprites, insectile aliens, and more. In practice the Shadowleague is almost impotent.
Against this complex background, various characters struggle across the landscape through terrible weather. A woman Loremaster and her irrepressibly feisty firedrake companion play leading parts in the large cast (many of whom suffer death or worse). After tortuous regroupings and plot twists centered on a particular city that houses a key magical shrine, the book concludes with a gory invasion of nasties through the holed curtain wall. It reads well enough, and of course there's more to come. --David Langford, Amazon.co.uk

Sherlock Homes and the case of Sabina Hall
Auteur(s): Pamela Greenwood
Editeur: Pocket
Genre: Detective
Série: Sherlock Holmes
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Greenwood's second borrowing from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle tops her first, Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Raleigh Legacy. As narrated by Watson, this is a more plausible and twisty tale, set off by a note from Holmes's university friend, Aubrey Tyson, which takes Watson and the detective to Sabina Hall, the home of Tyson's elderly, ailing Uncle Silas Andrews. The nephew wants a doctor to check on the old man, and Watson obliges, accompanied by Holmes whose antennae correctly alert him to intrigue. The miser Andrews dies of poison, and so does his sister-in-law and heir, Bertha Garth. Not until a third death occurs does the sleuthing genius separate the guilty from the innocent. Among the suspects: a cheeky maid incongruously far from her Cockney neighborhood; ingenuous young Agnes Meredith, Garth's companion; a clergyman, visibly relieved when Garth dies; and Old Neb, whose lucrative business Andrews had closed, throwing the villagers on the dole. The source of the poison, thujone, from the savin juniper, plays an interesting part in the solution of the case. Detective Book Club selection.

Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (The)
Auteur(s): Arthur Conan, Sir Doyle
Editeur: Wordsworth
Genre: Detective
Série: Sherlock Holmes 1
Résumé: From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes II is narrated by British theatre, film, and television actor David Timson. His Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson are near perfect. The only place where Timson's narration is less than perfect is his female and German characters. All in all, this is a fine production, with piano and string music by Paganini and others sprinkled throughout. All of the stories take place after Dr. Watson has married and moved from Baker Street. "The Scandal in Bohemia" is a good story with which to begin, because in it Watson describes both Holmes' singular lifestyle of old books, the violin and cocaine, and his extraordinary powers of deduction and disguise. This information may help to reel in students who are unfamiliar with the stories of Arthur Conan Doyle. The four cases are interconnected in that, although Holmes solves each case, in each he has to admit a failure, which adds a humanizing quality to the otherwise invincible Holmes. In "The Scandal in Bohemia," Watson and Holmes try to extract a photograph and compromising letters from the opera singer, Irene Adler. In "The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb," Holmes must untangle events that have led a hydraulic engineer to have his thumb chopped off while working for the secretive Colonel Stark. In "The Five Orange Pips," unravels a plot by Klu Klux Klan members to retrieve sensitive documents from the Openshaw family, or kill all of them in the process. Finally, in "Silver Blaze," Holmes and Watson must succeed where the Dartmoor authorities have failed, by finding prized racehorse, Silver Blaze, whose trainer has been killed. the 12-page booklet provides information about the author, the musical selections, and the timing of each cassette. All Sherlock Holmes aficionados will appreciate the quality of Timson's narration. For students, listening in the classroom might help to make the accents, language, and setting more understandable.

Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes (The)
Auteur(s): Arthur Conan, Sir Doyle
Editeur: Wordsworth
Genre: Detective
Série: Sherlock Holmes 2
Résumé: Book Description
Sherlock Holmes was not the only writing Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) did but Holmes and Dr. Watson are his most remembered characters.
Holmes titled himself a "Consulting Detective". His powers of observation, his understanding of crime, and his insights into the criminal mind were brilliant. His knowledge of things not related to crime were extemely limited, except in opera and the violin.
Like many other authors famous for a single character, Authur Conan Doyle attempted to "kill" Holmes. But the readers would not let this happen. Holmes eventually appeared in 56 short stories and 4 novels.--This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Résumé: From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-Listeners will be thrilled by this final episode of the Song of the Lioness quartet by Tamora Pierce (Random, pap. 1997). In this series that began with Alanna: The First Adventure (Atheneum, 1983), the lioness reaches the height of her power. As the first female knight in the mythical country of Tortall, Alanna sets out to find the powerful Dominion Jewel in the hope that she can save her war-torn nation from disaster. As always, Alanna is stunning in battle and wise in her deeds. It's no wonder she has many suitors vying for her hand in marriage. Can the lioness be tamed? Listeners will be guessing right up to the exciting conclusion. The production, narrated by actress Trini Alvarado, smoothly weaves dramatic reading and Pierce's outstanding fantasy. Alvarado's even pacing perfectly matches the crisp tone of the book, which reads and feels like great historical fiction. Her performance will have listeners believing that Tortall really existed and that the bards truly sang about Alanna's prowess on the battlefield. While this fourth offering will stand on its own, listeners will beg to hear (all available from Listening Library) or read previous titles, including In the Hand of the Goddess (Atheneum, 1984) and The Woman Who Rides Like a Man (Atheneum, 1986). A thoroughly enjoyable listening experience guaranteed to enthrall a host of new fans to Pierce's enchanting saga.

Domes of Fire
Auteur(s): David Eddings
Editeur: Harpercollins Pub Ltd
Genre: Fantastic
Série: Sparhawk /Tamuli 1
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Magic, insurrection, rebirth and new gods and cultures propel this first volume of a proposed second trilogy featuring Sir Sparhawk, Queen Ehlana and other stalwarts of Eddings's best-selling Elenium trilogy. The distant Tamul Empire, endangered by civil unrest exacerbated by paranormal (or magical, depending on the point of view) incidents, begs help from Sparhawk, destroyer of the Elder God Azash and savior of the Elenes. Undertaking the long journey to Tamul, the knight, his royal wife, their daughter Princess Danae and assorted followers encounter unrest in each of the lands through which they pass. Incidents taking more or less the same form--rumors, supported by rabble-rousing orators, of ancient heroes reborn to lead the downtrodden--arouse Sparhawk's suspicion of godly or magical opposition to his cause. Arriving in the Tamul capital, Sparhawk and his cohorts thwart a plot against the emperor but find disturbing evidence that the Troll-Gods and other old enemies are at work. Eddings' likable, spirited characters are not deeply etched but they reflect his original touch nevertheless.

Shining Ones (The)
Auteur(s): David Eddings
Editeur: Del Rey
Genre: Fantastic
Série: Sparhawk /Tamuli 2
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Sir Sparhawk and his wife, Queen Ehlana of Elenia, encounter ever more sinister plots in the second book of The Tamuli , following Domes of Fire , as they try to help the emperor of Tamuli take a firm grasp of the government. In a world of many gods, whose powers depend on the number and fervor of their worshippers, the royal couple find themselves pawns in the struggle of one entity to free his followers, albeit bloodthirsty and un-neighborly, from constraints placed upon them eons previously. Unrest spreads throughout Tamuli, with indications of sorcery and meddling by various gods, prompting the goddess Aphrael, reincarnated as the royal couple's young daughter Danae, to retrieve the powerful sapphire-rose jewel Bhelliom, hidden a few years earlier after being used to destroy the evil god Azash. While Sparhawk, Aphrael (now in the guise of the child Flute) and various companions race through a hostile countryside, encountering the mythical and abhorred Shining Ones, the queen and emperor play a more stylized game to keep the enemy at bay. Neatly blending simplicity and complexity, this tale of comradeship, dastardly doings, multiple gods, strange races and noble and ignoble humans is vintage Eddings.

This fantasy adventure is a sequel to The Tamuli, set in the exotic Tamul empire. Narrator Glover conquers the obscure and original vocabulary of this imaginary world, making the fantasy nomenclature sound like ordinary words. He does very well with a variety of accents and full casts: young and old, good and evil, human and inhuman. The program features extensive musical support, from single instruments to full symphonic styles. The music rises and falls with the action. In the tradition of radio, extensive sound effects are used. M.G.S. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition.

Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
In this conclusion to the trilogy begun with Domes of Fire, Sir Sparhawk must rescue his wife, Queen Ehlana of Elenia, from the followers of the mad god Cyrgon. Her kidnapping occurs as various Church Knights and Atan troops are finishing what they believe are mopping-up operations against the enemies of the Tamuli emperor, Sarabian. Ehlana's abductor is the son of the Styric renegade masterminding a plot against the emperor. Her safe return is promised in exchange for Bhelliom, the powerful living gem responsible for the destruction of the evil god Azash. The Pandion knight Berit, disguised as Sparkhawk by a spell, moves from place to place following the kidnappers' instructions, while Sparhawk, in another guise, seeks allies, and the child-goddess Aphrael (reborn as Ehlana's and Sparhawk's daughter Danae) calls on some reluctant fellow gods to lend aid. These moves are gravely complicated by the machinations of Cyrgon, who has unleashed Klael, the ancient embodiment of evil. A new note of introspection gives a fuller dimension to Eddings's rousing adventure.

Empire Strikes Back
Auteur(s): Donald Glut
Editeur: Orbit
Genre: Fantastic
Série: Star Wars 5
Résumé: Donald F. Glut took over from Lucas to write the novelisation of the second film in the original Star Wars trilogy. First published in 1980, it follows the plot of the film without pausing to take the opportunities offered by a novel to explore the inner thoughts or feelings of any of the characters. This reflects the tone of the film, in which the lead characters of Luke, Han and Leia are action heroes dedicated to the destruction of evil. Their personal histories have been fleshed out by later writers, and the focus here is very much on action.
Glut handles the action at a fast pace: the opening battle on the ice world of Hoth, the pursuit of Han's ship, the Millennium Falcon, through an asteroid belt by Imperial ships, and our heroes' adventures in Lando Calrissian's Cloud City of Bespin where they encounter treachery and fall into the clutches of the evil Darth Vader. Meanwhile, Luke learns to control the Force under the tutelage of the tiny Jedi master Yoda amongst the suitably damp and uninviting swamps of Dagobah.
This workmanlike entry in the trilogy retells the story without frills--these are left to the imagination of the reader. --Elizabeth Sourbut
