Résumé: From AudioFile
Oh, the contentment of settling down with an Agatha Christie--the happy anticipation of mystery and deceit. This 1957 Miss Marple offers the satisfaction of her solution to the murder witnessed by her friend Elspeth McGillicuddy as one train runs momentarily beside another. Before her recent death, Joan Hickson personified Miss Marple in 12 of the Christie books adapted for television by the BBC. The series seen in the States on PBS and A&E-TV is generally regarded as the most faithful adaptation of Christie's Miss Marple books. On the television and in this audiobook, recorded in 1994, Hickson simply IS the mild, elderly, deceptively parochial lady with piercing insight into human wrongdoing. She also manages to inhabit the other characters in this book beautifully, not so much by creating voices, as by variations in diction and speech rhythm. Her voice is old, yet strong, and her pacing is superb. Rarely have Christie's quiet humor and wry characterizations been so clearly voiced. Angels and Demons
Auteur(s): Dan Brown
Editeur: Corgi Adult
Genre: Detective
Série:
Résumé: It takes guts to write a novel that combines an ancient secret brotherhood, the Swiss Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire, a papal conclave, mysterious ambigrams, a plot against the Vatican, a mad scientist in a wheelchair, particles of antimatter, jets that can travel 15,000 miles per hour, crafty assassins, a beautiful Italian physicist, and a Harvard professor of religious iconology. It takes talent to make that novel anything but ridiculous. Kudos to Dan Brown (Digital Fortress) for achieving the nearly impossible. Angels & Demons is a no-holds-barred, pull-out-all-the-stops, breathless tangle of a thriller--think Katherine Neville's The Eight (but cleverer) or Umberto Eco's Foucault's Pendulum (but more accessible).
Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon is shocked to find proof that the legendary secret society, the Illuminati--dedicated since the time of Galileo to promoting the interests of science and condemning the blind faith of Catholicism--is alive, well, and murderously active. Brilliant physicist Leonardo Vetra has been murdered, his eyes plucked out, and the society's ancient symbol branded upon his chest. His final discovery, antimatter, the most powerful and dangerous energy source known to man, has disappeared--only to be hidden somewhere beneath Vatican City on the eve of the election of a new pope. Langdon and Vittoria, Vetra's daughter and colleague, embark on a frantic hunt through the streets, churches, and catacombs of Rome, following a 400-year-old trail to the lair of the Illuminati, to prevent the incineration of civilization.
Brown seems as much juggler as author--there are lots and lots of balls in the air in this novel, yet Brown manages to hurl the reader headlong into an almost surreal suspension of disbelief. While the reader might wish for a little more sardonic humor from Langdon, and a little less bombastic philosophizing on the eternal conflict between religion and science, these are less fatal flaws than niggling annoyances--readers should have no trouble skimming past them and immersing themselves in a heck of a good read. "Brain candy" it may be, but my! It's tasty. --Kelly Flynn

Résumé: The term "must have" is often overused, but here it can be honestly applied. Remember in At the Mountains of Madness where the narrator repeatedly refers to the frozen landscapes looking like some obscure painter's works? Here you can finally find out who that painter was, and see some of his works! For that alone this book is great, but the rest of the annotations are excellent. Luckily, there is a sequel.

Résumé: Harvard professor Robert Langdon receives an urgent late-night phone call while on business in Paris: the elderly curator of the Louvre, Jacques Sauniere, has been brutally murdered inside the museum. Alongside the body, police have found a series of baffling codes. As Langdon and a gifted French cryptologist, Sophie Neveu, begin to sort through the bizarre riddles, they are stunned to find a trail that leads to the works of Leonardo Da Vinci - and suggests the answer to a mystery that stretches deep into the vault of history. Langdon suspects the late curator was involved in the Priory of Sion - a centuries-old secret society - and has sacrificed his life to protect the Priory's most sacred trust: the location of an important religious relic hidden for centuries. But it appears that Opus Dei, a clandestine sect that has long plotted to seize the Priory's secret, has now made its move. Unless Langdon and Neveu can decipher the labyrinthine code and quickly assemble the pieces of the puzzle, the Priory's secret - and a stunning historical truth - will be lost for ever... in the U.S.A. and film rights sold with Ron Howard confirmed to direct!
Daily Telegraph Murder File
Auteur(s): Neil Darbyshire, Jonathan Goodman
Editeur: Mandarin
Genre: Detective
Série:
Résumé: This is a collection of celebrated murder cases which uses reports from "The Daily Telegraph", enabling readers to follow the cases and see the contemporary headlines and advertisements used in the paper at the time. The reports are linked to commentary by Jonathan Goodman, the author of 30 books on crime. He looks at the background to the murders and the evolving ways of reporting them, and introduces some of the influential figures, from judges to executioners, responsible for their trial and sometimes capital punishment. Cases are chosen for their variety of methods of murder, locations and social classes of killers and/or victims. The earliest is that of Dr William Palmer, the multi-poisoner of Rugeley, who was tried in 1856, a year after the "Telegraph" began publication. Covering the "brides in the bath" case, Elvira Barney, Christie and Evans, and Ruth Ellis, the book ends with the last public hanging.

Résumé: In most thrillers, "hardware" consists of big guns, airplanes, military vehicles, and weapons that make things explode. Dan Brown has written a thriller for those of us who like our hardware with disc drives and who rate our heroes by big brainpower rather than big firepower. It's an Internet user's spy novel where the good guys and bad guys struggle over secrets somewhat more intellectual than just where the secret formula is hidden--they have to gain understanding of what the secret formula actually is.
In this case, the secret formula is a new means of encryption, capable of changing the balance of international power. Part of the fun is that the book takes the reader along into an understanding of encryption technologies. You'll find yourself better understanding the political battles over such real-life technologies as the Clipper Chip and PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) software even though the book looks at the issues through the eyes of fiction.
Although there's enough globehopping in this book for James Bond, the real battleground is cyberspace, because that's where the "bomb" (or rather, the new encryption algorithm) will explode. Yes, there are a few flaws in the plot if you look too closely, but the cleverness and the sheer fun of it all more than make up for them. There are enough twists and turns to keep you guessing and a lot of high, gee-whiz-level information about encryption, code breaking, and the role they play in international politics. Set aside the whole afternoon and evening for it and have finger food on hand for supper--you may want to read this one straight through.

Résumé: From Booklist
*Starred Review* Peter DelaSangre lives in seclusion with his father on an island off the coast of Florida. They have good reason for their isolation: Peter and his father are dragons. Capable of taking human form, they have built a successful business in Florida, run by humans they control but don't trust. Peter and his father feed on humans, but do so stealthily, so as not to draw attention to themselves. But when Peter brings a young woman named Maria to the island in secret and kills her to avoid having her discover that he is a dragon, he draws the suspicion of her brother, Jorge. Peter is distracted, however, by his father's death and the scent of a female dragon who possibly could become his mate. When he at last finds this female dragon, Elizabeth, he fights for her and wins her as his bride. Jorge's relentless search for his sister and the treachery of someone working at Peter's company dog the young couple, and Elizabeth is perplexed by Peter's unwillingness to merely do away with his human enemies. The tension builds as a mysterious further enemy becomes a real threat to the dragons. An exciting, inventive, unique novel with, in Peter, a surprisingly sympathetic protagonist. Kristine Huntley

The Dragon Quintet
Auteur(s): Marvin Kaye
Editeur: Tor Books
Genre: Fantastic
Série:
Résumé: In the first story Orson Scott Card writes about a mysterious dragon that lives in the wiring of an old house. One of the tenants has a connection with this dragon. I guess this story might fall into the older semi-horror stories. It is entertaining and the ending is somewhat unexpected (not completely).
The next story is by Mercedes Lackey. She writes about a slave boy who is chosen to care for a warrior's dragon. The relationship with the dragon's owner leads the young boy into an unexpected path in his life. I would say that this story is wholly along Lackey's usual style of writing - happy endings and all. The story was entertaining, but not one of her best.
The third story takes us into a midieval setting. A young servant girl sees a dragon and reacts strongly to it. Into her village appears a knight in armor ready to slay the dragon. She manages to attach herself to the knight and they search for the dragon. Then the story becomes unusual for dragon stories. I haven't read any other books by Tanith Lee, so I don't know if this short story is close to her usual style. I enjoyed the story.
Elizabeth Moon writes story no. 4 about a young man who has to flee his village. He meets up with dwarves and dragons and a fight for his soul, and the souls of loved ones. Not Moon's usual style, but she brings excellence into fantasy as well.
The last story, by Michael Swanwick's, is completely different from the others. In this story technology and faery are combined into a tale of deceit and bravery. I enjoyed it, more so than the first three stories.
All in all this book was enjoyable, but not on my top ten list. Still, I did read through it all and have not regretted it.

Faerie Wars
Auteur(s): Herbie Brennan
Editeur: Bloomsbury
Genre: Fantastic

Résumé: From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8–The Faerie Wars (Bloomsbury, 2003) by Herbie Brennan is an introduction to the complex world of the Faerie Realm, which is inhabited by the Faeries of the Night and the Faeries of the Light. The two main characters are teenaged boys, Henry Atherton, a likeable, forthright, British boy whose family is breaking up as a result of his mother's lesbian affair with his father's secretary, and Prince Pyrgus Malvae, heir to the Purple Emperor, a brave, socially conscious Faerie of the Light. The come from very different worlds but are thrown together when Henry is cleaning out the shed of his summer employer, Mr. Fogarty, a wily but brilliant physicist. Pyrgus has gotten into big trouble in the faerie realm and his father has had him "translated" into the "Analogue World" (our world) to protect him. Mr. Fogarty's backyard is a portal between the two realms. Mr. Fogarty's physics background allows him and Henry to try to help Pyrgus get back home and, in so doing, a friendship develops between the three. This story about friendship, honor, good and evil, with some weapons, demons, and a budding romance thrown in for fun, is filled with symbolism, wit, and irony. Listeners will find the ending surprisingly satisfying considering that the book ends with the words, "to be continued." The main characters are genuine, appealing, and well developed. Other characters are merely introduced, and we are left hoping to learn more about them in ensuing episodes. Narrator Gerard Doyle does a remarkable job of bringing each character alive. He reads clearly with great enthusiasm and vibrancy, allowing whimsy and mischief to emerge. Fantasy readers will thoroughly enjoy this audiobook, especially fans of Artemis Fowl and Harry Potter.–Jo-Ann Carhart, East Islip Public Library, NY

From Booklist
Gr. 6-8. When Henry Atherton arrives at the house of eccentric old Mr. Fogarty, he comes upon crown prince Pyrgus Malvae, who has escaped the Faerie realm, where the Faeries of the Night want to kill him. Mr. Fogarty and Henry decide to help the prince return home. It's a complex situation, involving an evil demon, two avaricious glue factory owners, and Lord Hairstreak, leader of the Faeries of the Night, each with a personal agenda that will lead to taking over the realm. A subplot (Henry realizes that his mother, not his father, is having an affair with his father's secretary) is totally unnecessary, and there are discrepancies in the story and some awkwardness to slow things down. Still, there's enough solid adventure in the Faerie realm to keep readers on the edge of their seats. Sally Estes

Editeur: J'ai lu
Genre: Fantastic
--Laurent Schneitter

The Flightless Falcon
Auteur(s): Mickey Zucker Reichert
Editeur: DAW
Genre: Fantastic
Série:
Résumé: With her latest novel, popular heroic fantasy author Reichert begins a brand new fantasy series. After a terrible mining accident which makes being underground unbearable for him, our hero Tamison seeks other work to feed his family. He has no luck breaking into the powerful guild brotherhood which control commerce in Lathary. Caught stealing food, he spends the next two years in prison, only to discover after his release that his family disappeared not long after his sentencing. Desperate to find them, he teams up with Dallan, a Lathary city guardsman, a mysterious thief named Con, and Rifkah, a foreign fortuneteller. They embark on a dangerous journey to rival city Callos, where Dallan says his family and Tamison's were taken as slaves to serve evil Lord Mannkorus. As they get closer to Callos, however, mutual suspicion pushes the group apart even as their trials draw them together.
In the end they uncover a plot far nastier than any of them expected, one rife with double-dealing and deception, which only their mutual cooperation can defeat. The novel's smaller scale and less-than-obviously heroic characters mark a pleasant change of pace from Reichert's more traditional epic fantasy works. Her fans will enjoy the adventure and intrigue of this fast-paced, if slightly predictable, start to a new series. --Charlene Brusso

Résumé: In her 11th affecting fantasy novel for young adults, Newbery Medal-winning author Susan Cooper (The Dark Is Rising sequence) writes again of the clash between good and evil. Bahamians Trey, age 12, and his mute brother Lou, 7, find themselves tugged between two parallel worlds: their own happy island life, threatened by big-business developers, and a murky, sinister otherworld called Pangaia, entered accidentally through a magical window between worlds. In a series of journeys between the two realms, Lou is saluted by underground rebels as their mythic savior Lugh, and the siblings are asked to lead the Greenwar against the Government ("the destroyers"). Along the way, Trey and Lou encounter hideous mutant insects, murderous floods in tunnels, helicopter attacks, and capture by the pro-progress, high-tech Government. Although the plot is occasionally convoluted, Susan Cooper fans will be drawn deep into the story, with its zealous Luddite-styled green guerrillas and the equally ardent progress extremists. Lou and Trey are enormously likeable, and the tropical island setting is beautifully portrayed. Ultimately, nature, myth, and destiny crash together in a breathtaking climax that will leave readers of all ages contemplating the direction our own world is taking. (Ages 9 to 13) --Emilie Coulter

Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Somewhere in the middle of this rather bewildering novel, its heroine, Ann, realizes that she is not--as she and the reader had thought--the 12-year-old daughter of suburban London grocers, but is in fact a 20-something rebel from another galaxy. Ann (whose name is really Vierran) has come to earth as the unwilling handmaiden of the evil Reigner Three who, along with four other Reigners, controls most of the known universe. An ancient and powerful machine known as the Bannus has been reactivated and poses a threat to the Reigners' rule. Vierran must join forces with Mordion, the Reigner Servant, in order to keep from becoming a pawn in Reigner One's dastardly scheme to breed future Servants. These are just a few of the plot-lines that come together in a confusing finale that invokes the legends of King Arthur as well as the gods and heroes of Northern Europe. Certain moments in the muddled narrative will reward the persevering reader: Mordion's long-repressed recollection of his sad and brutal childhood possesses a spine-chilling intensity. But on the whole, Jones is not at her bewitching best. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9-Futuristic, virtual-reality technology melds with the realm of Faerie to liberate the galaxy from the corrupt Reigners who have controlled it for the past 1,000 years. Set in an English village in 1992, the novel's web of events is catalyzed by a bored employee of Hexwood Farm, a secret outpost of the interplanetary rulers. He tampers with the Reigners' old, computerlike machine, the Bannus, hoping it will cough up a hobbit-and-dragon role-playing game. But the Bannus's game is for real, and it sucks the players it chooses-including transcendental souls like Arthur, Merlin, and Fitela-into its field of influence and forces them to act (without changing their natures) within its own scenarios. Unleashed in the Wood (which has power of its own, being a part of the eternal, enchanted forest), the machine is able to stage a battle to dethrone the unrightful Reigners and to choose the best possible new ones. The battlefield the Bannus and the Wood create is Arthurian, complete with castle, sorcery, knights, and dragons. The characters' ages and physical forms often change, though not so fast that readers will lose track of what's going on. Time, too, is fluid. Jones's knife-sharp prose delves with psychedelic clarity into the shared subconscious of humankind. The book is humorous as well, with lines that call Douglas Adams, Monty Python, and James Bond to mind. A wide range of readers will find it marvelously mind-stretching. They may even be tempted to read it twice.

Résumé: Set in the heart of the South American jungle and featuring Declan Carberry, the not-so-handsome hero of Day of Wrath, this page-turner oozes excitement, exotica and Formula One suspense.
Archaeologist Leo is on a dig. But this is no ordinary assignment. He's deep in the heart of the Mexican jungle uncovering another centuries old Mayan City. Like a surgeon performing a most-intricate operation, Leo and his team skilfully remove each crumb of earth with the utmost precision.
In France, Declan Carberry is busy trying to solve a string of ritual serial murders.
Horrific in the extreme, the questions are who and why? Declan needs to move fast, for time is running out. Delving into the history of the Conquistadors and the Maya of South America, this vertiginous tale of snaring and netting, old rituals and modern codes, blood-letting and immortality is Easterman at his dizzying best

Résumé: This book has been printed with two different dust jackets--one black, one white. Amazon.co.uk is unable to accept requests for a specific cover. The various covers will be assigned to orders at random.
Any book touted as the ‘adult Harry Potter’ runs the risk of attracting critical parries from swords of the double-edged variety. If this wasn’t enough, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell--the debut novel from Susanna Clarke--also invites comparisons with Jane Austen. Set in the early nineteenth-century, the action moves from genteel drawing rooms—albeit where a mischievous Faerie king sips tea with the wife of a very human government minister, to the bloody battleground of Waterloo, where giant hands of earth drag men to their doom. The juxtaposition of perfectly realised magical worlds and the everyday one with which JK Rowling and Philip Pullman so successfully captured our imaginations and the social comedy of Austen and Thackeray can easily be recognised. But less easy to pastiche is the ability of these writers to induce sheer narrative pleasure, and it is Clarke’s great achievement that she succeeds with this hugely enjoyable read.
Gilbert Norrell is determined to single-handedly rehabilitate his sanitised and patriotic version of English magic, which has suffered a post-Enlightenment neglect after a richly dark history. He ruthlessly secures his place as England’s only magician in two marvellously drawn feats. First, he brings the statutes of York Cathedral to life and then, to facilitate his entry into London society, he brings a young bride-to-be back from the dead--a feat with terrible consequences. However, another more naturally gifted magician—Jonathan Strange—emerges to become his pupil and later his rival. Strange becomes increasingly obsessed with the Raven King—the medieval lord-magician of the North of England and pursues his desire to recruit a fairy servant to the edge of madness. Whilst the differing characters of Norrell and Strange give the book a central human conflict, it is the tension between the dual natures of civilised and wilder magic that lends it a metaphysical texture that shades the narrative with wonderful and troubling descriptions of ships made of rain, paths between mirrors and faerie roads leading out of England to a bleak yet dazzling realm. Fortunately, the precision of her storytelling never reigns in Clarke’s prodigious imagination.
Clarke’s broad canvas of characters—including Wellington, Napoleon and Bryon, locations and tones are masterfully realised. However, sometimes her own enchantment with them leads her to drop her pace, although even at almost 800 pages, this is a book to which you’ll muster up little resistance. Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is the perfect novel to take up residence in as the nights get longer. -- Fiona Buckland

Kingdoms of Light

Genre: Fantastic

Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Bestselling veteran Foster, author of more than 80 genre titles, including the Spellsinger and Journeys of the Catechist series, brings readers another action-packed fantasy, one that might have come straight from the vaults of Disney. The peaceful kingdom of Gowdlands is invaded by the goblin Totumakk Horde, led by the evil Khaxan Mundurucu, a company of warlocks who handily kill the mightiest wizard, Susnam Evyndd, and banish all the land's colors. Unbeknownst to them, the wise mage has one last spell to cast. Susnam's pets--three cats, a scruffy terrier, a songbird and a boa--are transformed into human shape and sent on a quest to find the source of the Pure Light of coloration and restore gray, gloomy Gowdlands to normal. To accomplish the task, the former animals must come to terms with their new forms and each other, while battling goblin magic and those who would stand in their way. Their journey takes them through a magical rainbow and across a spectrum of kingdoms, each ruled by a different color, until at last they reach the source of Pure Light. Foster's brand of storytelling, lighthearted even at the darkest moments, doesn't leave much room for doubt about how it's all going to turn out. Fans of swift-moving plots and imaginative settings will overlook the thin characters and enjoy this pleasant fantasy tale.

The fearsome sorcerer Khaxan Mundurucu has laid waste to the Gowdlands. While a host of goblins terrorize the land, leaching it of all color and destroying the will of the conquered populace, a dying wizard's final spell transforms his pets into a company of human heroes who possess the only chance of restoring hope and freedom to their world. The author of the "Journeys of the Catechist" trilogy and numerous other works of fantasy and sf produces a standalone fantasy that features six uncommon characters charged with a seemingly impossible task. Humor and wit enliven this quest-tale, which belongs in most fantasy and YA collections.

Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Though SF "master of prose technique" and "paragon of the storytelling art" (in the introductory words of Robert Silverberg, himself a certified luminary) Roger Zelazny died in 1995, collections of his work appear on shelves with pleasing regularity. The Last Defender of Camelot, the fifth in the series of new Zelazny editions, offers readers 11 of what Silverberg has deemed his best stories, including "24 Views of Mt. Fuji, by Hokusai," which earned him one of his six Hugos, and 1992's "Come Back to the Killing Ground, Alice, My Love," which has not been previously collected.

One of the greatest storytellers of our time, Roger Zelazny was a writer who created entire civilizations from whole cloth as masterfully as he explored mankind's place in the cosmos. From the depths of space to the depths of the human heart, from our darkest nightmares to our most fanciful dreams, Zelazny wove colorful tapestries that presented the wonders of the universe to us all.

Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Hart has done a careful job of sifting through all of Agatha Christie's stories and novels devoted to Miss Jane Marple to piece together this "biography" of the spinster detective. The book opens with a description of Miss Marple's hometown, St. Mary Mead, a village south of London. The reader is introduced to many of the residents, from the Vicar to the fishmonger's delivery boys (all of whom are named Fred). From the Marple works Hart extracts references to the detective's past, and reconstructs her girlhood and the genesis of her career. The author also follows Miss Marple through the 1930s and World War II, and describes her appearance and personality, daily routine, travels and relationships with relatives and friends. Though the casual reader of Christie mysteries may think this is a bit precious, Miss Marple zealots will find it charming, and a suitable companion to The Collected Stories, reviewed above. From Library Journal
Two useful additions to the growing corpus of Christie explication. Canadian author Hart has gleaned a remarkable amount of biographical detail from a careful (and obviously enjoyable) reading of the 12 books and 20 short stories featuring Christie's favorite female sleuth. After describing the village of St. Mary Mead, Hart recounts Miss Marple's life and adventures chronologically, then explores her personality and detection methods. This very readable study concludes with an extensive Marpelian bibliography. Recommended for fans and skeptics alike. Although very different in format and method, Morselt's book is another labor of love. One-page character and plot summaries are presented in separate chronological order for 66 novels and 144 short stories. These are numbered sequentially and followed by an appendix identifying "who-dunnits" tied in with the numerical keys, so that the mysteries aren't spoiled for the potential reader. Four indexes complete this unusual British import. Jeanne Gelinas, Hennepin Cty. Lib., Golden Valley, Minn.

Lightning

Editeur: Headline Book Pub Ltd
Genre: Fantastic
Série:
Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Laura Shane leads a troubled life: she is orphaned, nearly molested twice and loses one of her closest friends in a tragic accident, all before her 13th birthday. Even worse events would have befallen Laura if not for the mysterious guardian angel who periodically appears with a bolt of lightning to miraculously rescue her. The "angel," Stefan, is in fact a time traveler who rides the "lightning road" through time to follow Laura throughout her adult life; unfortunately, Stefan himself is being chased through time by a pack of equally mysterious villains, and their pursuit of Stefan and Laura spans the second half of the novel. The secret of the lightning road provides an intriguing mystery early on, but once it is revealed midway through the book as a complicated hybrid of borrowed science-fiction and political-thriller conceits, the narrative runs out of ideas. In the lightning road, Koontz has created the kind of sci-fi puzzle whose convoluted logic must be explained at every turn, and the momentum of the central, fairly standard chase suffers thereby. The drama of an innocent bystander forced by events to run for his or her life is familiar to Koontz readers, but this time he leaves out a vital ingredient; while his evil predators are often his most interesting characters (as in this year's Watchers, or the earlier Whispers), the villains of Lightning tend toward cliches. The reader senses that the author got too caught up in the trick of the lightning, and inadvertently stole the thunder from the rest of this potentially intriguing tale.

From Library Journal
On the night of Laura Shane's birth, a stranger appears from the lightning to prevent her delivery's being botched by an alcoholic physician. Throughout Laura's childhood the stranger reappears at times of danger. He protects rather than threatens, yet menace seems to follow him. Thirty years later another storm flashes and the stranger collapses, shot, at Laura's door. Now Laura protects her erstwhile guardian from mysterious hunters. He reveals that he and the hunters are time travelers. Laura, quick-witted and brave, leads the way to a bloody showdown. The paradox in time travel's tampering with history provides an interesting twist in this gripping thriller by a popular writer. Literary Guild selection.A.M.B. Résumé: From AudioFile
This seminal English mystery is presented in an unusual, but appropriate, manner, reflecting the episodic nature of the story. Three actors present the story in parts, taking on separate first-person accounts of events. All the voices are convincing, cultured British intonations describing the events surrounding the apparent theft of the Moonstone diamond from a country mansion. Each voice shades the various characters featured within the particular parts, just as the narrative offers characterizations of the other persons without attempting an outright mimicry. The abridgment is nicely done, too, avoiding any choppiness. D.W. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition.

*Starred Review* Young Xiao Yen's life veers dramatically from the ordinary after her aunt, Wang Tie-Tie, head of the family, sends her to train with a local magician whose particular talent is creating magic with origami. As a mage's apprentice, Xiao Yen is an embarrassment to the rest of her family. Magery is "man's work," after all, and will likely make her undesirable as a mate. Although torn between her love for magic and her familial duty, Xiao Yen nevertheless accepts, out of respect for her aunt, a commission to escort two foreigners and their valuable cargo through the dangerous remote territory of the Middle Kingdom. Leaving her beloved family, she embarks upon a journey that will change her completely. For soon she is approached by the goddess Bei Xi, who is traveling in disguise as a member of Xiao Yen's party. She asks Xiao Yen's help in vanquishing a powerful oppressor of the Middle Kingdom--one who will soon bring war and destruction to the land. In an absolutely enchanting coming-of-age tale, Cutter's story and her elegant and precise writing beautifully and skillfully conjure what feels like the essence of ancient Chinese culture. Résumé: From Booklist
Trevor Blake has always known that he possesses magical gifts, but the small farming community where he lives forbids magic of any kind. Despite this local ban, Trevor hopes to learn more about his powers and immerse himself in the study of magic, and so he journeys with his best friend to the city Port-of-Lords, where he hopes to search for a hidden community of gifted magicians called the Adepts. Along the way, the friends encounter many challenges as Trevor attempts to master the arts of magic and survival. This dramatic story, the prequel to Sabin's A School for Sorcery (2002), with its young magician will inevitably invite comparisons to J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. And like Rowling's titles, this wholly satisfying fantasy features memorable characters, compelling story lines, and plenty of climactic scenes. Ed Sullivan

Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
The acclaimed author of children's fiction has turned her considerable talents to writing for adults, and has come up with a buoyant and boisterous romp through several universes. Unbeknownst to most people, a group of benevolent witches are hard at work keeping the world--and Great Britain in particular--safe from evil and destruction. Meanwhile, from their vantage point in another universe, the celibate magicians of Arth are busy spying on earth, and sending any likely-seeming ideas and inventions back to their own home planet, a Pentarchy--a world where magic is rife and originality is absent. Not satisfied with simply stealing ideas that already exist, Arth's magicians have taken to dispatching various disasters to earth (the latest is global warming) in order to learn from its inhabitants' reactions. Fed up with Arth's practice of using their world as a giant lab animal, earth's witches fill a magical bus with enchantresses and send it to Arth, with orders to make as much trouble as possible. They do. Matters are further complicated when a young woman (who may or may not be an embodiment of the Great Goddess) stows herself and her toddler son onto the witches' bus. Because there are a great many details that must be established before Jones can begin telling her story, the novel's first few chapters are relatively slow going. However, once the large cast of characters has been introduced and the three distinct worlds sketched out, the narrative careens ahead at a merry, headlong pace. Jones's sly sense of humor and her accurate, affectionate depiction of relations between women and men give an extra kick to this effervescent tale.

Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
In the highly stratified world of Kushner's nameless old city, the aristocrats living in fine mansions on the Hill settle their differences by sending to the thieves' den of Riverside for swordsmen who will fight to the death for a point of someone else's honor. Young Lord Michael Godwin is so taken by these romantic figures that he studies the art himselfuntil challenged by the best of them. Master of the Sword, Richard St. Vier is picky in his contracts and precise in his killing but he nevertheless becomes embroiled in the nobility's political, social and sexual intrigues. When his lover Alec is kidnapped by Lord Horn, St. Vier must take drastic action. Kushner's authorial voice may be somewhat smug and self-conscious but that suits her subject. Her novel is intelligent, humorous and dramatic, with a fine, malicious feeling for the operation of gossip in a closed society.

Résumé: When you step into a time machine, fax yourself through a "quantum foam wormhole," and step out in feudal France circa 1357, be very, very afraid. If you aren't strapped back in precisely 37 hours after your visit begins, you'll miss the quantum bus back to 1999 and be stranded in a civil war, caught between crafty abbots, mad lords, and peasant bandits all eager to cut your throat. You'll also have to dodge catapults that hurl sizzling pitch over castle battlements. On the social front, you should avoid provoking "the butcher of Crecy" or Sir Oliver may lop your head off with a swoosh of his broadsword or cage and immerse you in "Milady's Bath," a brackish dungeon pit into which live rats are tossed now and then for prisoners to eat.
This is the plight of the heroes of Timeline, Michael Crichton's thriller. They're historians in 1999 employed by a tech billionaire-genius with more than a few of Bill Gates's most unlovable quirks. Like the entrepreneur in Crichton's Jurassic Park, Doniger plans a theme park featuring artifacts from a lost world revived via cutting-edge science. When the project's chief historian sends a distress call to 1999 from 1357, the boss man doesn't tell the younger historians the risks they'll face trying to save him. At first, the interplay between eras is clever, but Timeline swiftly becomes a swashbuckling old-fashioned adventure, with just a dash of science and time paradox in the mix. Most of the cool facts are about the Middle Ages, and Crichton marvelously brings the past to life without ever letting the pulse-pounding action slow down. At one point, a time-tripper tries to enter the Chapel of Green Death. Unfortunately, its custodian, a crazed giant with terrible teeth and a bad case of lice, soon has her head on a block. "She saw a shadow move across the grass as he raised his ax into the air." I dare you not to turn the page!
Through the narrative can be glimpsed the glowing bones of the movie that may be made from Timeline and the cutting-edge computer game that should hit the market in 2000. Expect many clashing swords and chase scenes through secret castle passages. But the book stands alone, tall and scary as a knight in armor shining with blood. --Tim Appelo

Résumé: Book Description
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on 3rd January 1892 in Bloemfontein in the Orange Free State.
In early 1895 his mother, Mabel, returned to England with Ronald and his younger brother, Hilary, exhausted by the climate. After his father's death from rheumatic fever, the family made their home at Sarehole, near Birmingham. This beautiful rural area made a great impression on the young Ronald, and its effect can clearly be seen in his later writing and in his pictures.
Mabel died in 1904, leaving the boys to the care of Father Francis Morgan, a priest at the Birmingham Oratory. At King Edward's School, Ronald developed his linguistic talent and later began to invent languages of his own.
1914 saw the outbreak of the First World War. Ronald was in his final year at Oxford. He graduated the following year with a First in English language and literature and at once took up his commission as a second lieutenant in the Lancashire Fusiliers. Before embarking for France in 1916, he married his childhood sweetheart, Edith Bratt. Tolkien survived the Battle of the Somme but later that year he was struck down by trench fever and was invalided home.
The years after the war were devoted to his work as Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford, where he was soon to prove himself one of the finest philologists in the world. He had already started to write the great cycle of myths and legends which was to become The Silmarillion. He and Edith had four children and it was for them that he first told the tale of The Hobbit, which was published in 1937 by Sir Stanley Unwin. It was so successful that the publisher immediately wanted a sequel, but it was not until 1954 that the first volume of his great masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings, was published to instant acclaim. Its enormous popularity took Tolkien by surprise.
After retirement Ronald and Edith Tolkien moved to Bournemouth, but when Edith died in 1971, Tolkien returned to Oxford. He died after a brief illness on 2nd September 1973.--This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Résumé: From Publishers Weekly
Dragons ritually eat dragons in order to gain strength and power in Walton's enthralling new fantasy (after 2002's The Prize in the Game), set amid a hierarchical society that includes a noble ruling class, an established church, servants and retainers. On the death of the dragon Bon Agornin, his parson son Penn, one of five siblings (two male and three female), declares, "We must now partake of his remains, that we might grow strong with his strength, remembering him always." But Bon's greedy son-in-law, Illustrious Daverak, consumes more than his fair share of the departed dragon, setting off a chain of unexpected and, at times, calamitous events for each sibling. Avan, the younger son, decides to litigate for compensation. One unmarried daughter, on moving in with the married sister and Daverak, discovers a house filled with injustice, while the other unmarried daughter goes off with Penn and falls in love. Full of political intrigue and romance, this provocative read sets the stage for further adventures in a world that, as the author admits in her prefatory note, "owes a lot to Anthony Trollope's Framley Parsonage." FYI: In 2002, Walton received a John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer.

From Booklist
Walton says this book is "the result of wondering what a world would be like if the axioms of the sentimental Victorian novel were inescapable laws of biology." It is also something truly different in the line of the novel. After a father dies, his children must deal with the circumstances of his death. One son, a parson, agonizes over his sire's deathbed confession. Another starts a court case to gain the inheritance. One daughter must choose between her family of origin and her husband. Another falls in love, but her course does not run smoothly thereafter. So what's different about all that? Well, everyone in the story is a dragon, and in their society, children eat their deceased parents, and the stronger eat the weaker, for only by eating the flesh of its kind can a dragon achieve full strength and power. So therein lies the difference, and the distinction of a little masterpiece of originality. Frieda Murray

Résumé: From Library Journal
When a serious shortage of magical energy threatens the existence of his universe, Bentwood the troll devises a scheme to attract tourists from the outside world of mundane reality by disguising his world as a virtual reality computer game. Cushman's first novel pokes fun at theme parks, computer gamers, critics, and a host of other targets-and many of her shots hit the mark. Despite some stylistic weaknesses, the whole of this tongue-in-cheek fantasy is greater than the sum of its parts.
